Chapter 10: Debugging Reality

Ethan's breath came in steady but measured intervals as he stood still, feeling the aftermath of the distortion settle around him. The world had lagged, reality itself hesitated, but he was still here. Still intact.

Vance hadn't stopped watching him, his stance tense. "Alright, kid. You've broken something. Now what?"

Ethan flexed his fingers, testing the residual tingling in his arm. "Now… I figure out how to control it."

Vance exhaled sharply. "You don't just 'control' something like that. Do you even realize what you just did? The system detected a discrepancy. That means it's watching you."

Ethan's eyes flicked to the Mark, its glow dim but steady. "Good. Then I'll give it something to watch."

Vance groaned. "You don't get it. This isn't a game. If you push too hard, the system won't just observe—it'll correct. And if you're the error…"

"It'll try to delete me," Ethan finished, voice calm. "Yeah, I figured."

Vance stared at him, then sighed. "You really are insane."

Ethan smirked. "I prefer exploiter."

He focused again, reaching for the flicker of instability he had touched before. If he could trigger that lag, stretch the gap between system processes…

Maybe he could do more than just pause reality.

The sensation returned—a delicate thread of something unseen, fragile yet pliable. He reached for it, but this time, instead of pulling, he pushed.

The world shivered.

Vance gasped. "Ethan—"

Before he could finish, Ethan felt it.

Time wasn't just stopping—it was splitting.

The forest around him blurred. For a fraction of a second, two versions of reality overlapped. He could see himself standing still… and himself a step ahead.

A cold chill ran down his spine.

He was desyncing.

Then the system snapped back.

A surge of vertigo nearly sent Ethan to his knees, but he held firm. His breathing was heavy, but his mind was racing.

"That…" Vance's voice was a whisper. "That wasn't just a glitch. You just overwrote your own position."

Ethan wiped sweat from his forehead. "Which means I can alter my actions. Reposition myself before the system finalizes them."

Vance ran a hand through his hair. "You just short-circuited cause and effect, kid."

Ethan exhaled, his pulse steadying. "And I'm only getting started."

In the distance, the forest shifted. A presence stirred.

The system wasn't just watching anymore.

It was reacting.
