Mia had learned to live cautiously, always looking over her shoulder, always guarding her heart. But no amount of caution could have prepared her for what was coming.
It started with a message.
A simple email that popped up on her work computer as she sorted through Eleanor's latest demands. At first glance, it looked like any other corporate memo, but the moment she opened it, her blood ran cold.
Long time no see, Emily. I wonder how Adrian will feel when he learns the full truth?
No name. No sender ID. But she knew.
Samantha.
Mia's pulse pounded in her ears. How? How had she found her?
She forced herself to breathe, to think. Samantha had no power here. Not anymore.
But the email was just the beginning.
That evening, as she left work and made her way to the daycare, she saw her.
Samantha stood just across the street, her arms crossed, a slow smirk curling on her lips.
Mia's stomach twisted. She looked different—more polished, as if she had climbed her way back into wealth. But the malice in her eyes was the same.
For a brief, terrifying second, Mia considered running.
But no.
She was done running.
Instead, she squared her shoulders and walked straight past her, refusing to acknowledge the ghost from her past.
Samantha's voice followed her like poison.
"I see you've done well for yourself, Emily. New city, new life. A new family."
Mia halted. Slowly, she turned, her fists clenched. "What do you want?"
Samantha tilted her head, feigning innocence. "Just catching up. It's been, what? Seven years?" Her smile widened. "I heard a little rumor about you. About him."
Mia's breath caught.
"Adrian Sinclair," Samantha mused. "Quite the upgrade from Nathan, don't you think?"
The name was a dagger to Mia's heart.
She wouldn't let Samantha get to her. Not again.
"You don't know anything," Mia said coolly, forcing her voice to stay even.
Samantha laughed, low and amused. "Oh, sweetheart, I know enough."
And with that, she walked away, leaving Mia shaken and breathless.
She had expected Samantha to crawl back into her life eventually, but she hadn't anticipated how soon. Or how dangerous she might be.
But Samantha wasn't the only ghost lurking in the shadows.
Nathan was back, too.
And he had his own plans.

Adrian
Adrian had always sensed that something was off about Mia's past. He had spent weeks digging through old records, trying to find any trace of where she had been for the last seven years. But there was nothing—just a woman who had seemingly disappeared, only to reappear in Everdale with a child.
His child.
But before he could get answers, another problem surfaced.
Nathan.
The man had been a distant memory, a name Adrian barely registered—until now.
"Sir," Caleb said, stepping into Adrian's office. His expression was grim. "There's something you need to see."
He placed a folder on Adrian's desk.
Adrian opened it, his eyes scanning over the photos inside.
Nathan. Standing outside Sinclair Enterprises. Watching. Waiting.
Adrian's grip tightened.
"What the hell does he want?"
Caleb hesitated. "We're not sure yet, but he's been asking questions. About Mia. About you."
Adrian's jaw clenched.
Nathan had lost Mia once. He wasn't going to let him near her again.
And if Samantha and Nathan had both resurfaced at the same time?
It wasn't a coincidence.
Adrian wasn't just going to sit back and let them play their games.
They wanted to tear Mia down?
They'd have to go through him first.

Mia
That night, Mia sat in Liam's room, watching him sleep.
His tiny chest rose and fell peacefully, unaware of the storm brewing outside their home.
Samantha was back. Nathan was back.
And sooner or later, Adrian would start asking questions she wasn't ready to answer.
Mia had spent years protecting her son, shielding him from the pain of her past.
But now, the past was knocking at her door.
And this time, she wasn't sure if she could keep it out.
