Chapter 6 Invitation

Having been in the Douluo World for half a month, Amon had gradually become familiar with the rules of Frost Leaf City.

This was a backward, barbaric city.

The Nordics were the main ethnic group in the Northern Province; they were rude, belligerent, and often started fights over minor disagreements, like a group of human honey badgers.

Perhaps because most Nordics were simple-minded, the proportion of Soul Masters among them was very low.

Yan Jin could be considered a typical representative of Nordic Soul Masters; she had fought more than half the students in the school!

"Damn it!"

"Who are you cursing?"

Two drunken men accidentally bumped into each other, which led to a brawl. One grabbed a stone, while the other picked up a wooden stick.

They escalated from pushing and shoving to armed combat.

The passersby weren't surprised at all; some were even watching the show with great interest.

"Good, that punch was great, powerful, and at a tricky angle!" someone applauded.

A patrolling guard passed by and shouted, "Didn't I say no fighting in the streets? If you want to fight, find a deserted alley to settle it yourselves; no one will care even if you use knives."

Amon glanced at the guard; this was already considered dutiful, as most just turned a blind eye.

He arrived at a clothing store. A man in an earthy yellow robe and a semicircular felt hat greeted him with a smile, "Hello, customer... oh, it's you? The clothes you ordered here are ready."

The shopkeeper had a deep impression of Amon, a big customer. In Frost Leaf City, few people were willing to pay the price of a gold soul coin to order impractical, thin robes.

After all, the climate in the Northern Province was cold, and ordinary people could only wear such robes during the hottest days of the year. Even Soul Masters with strong physiques preferred to wear clothes with fleece.

Amon put on the custom-made clothes and looked at himself in the full-length mirror.

Black eyes, black hair, a broad forehead, thin lips, a lean face, a pointed wide-brimmed soft hat, a black classic robe, and a pair of black leather boots—he exuded a faint scholarly air, with a hint of wizardly mystery.

"Customer, are you satisfied?"

"Not bad." Amon handed the shopkeeper the remaining three gold soul coins, picked up the rest of the clothes in the cloth bag, and walked out of the clothing store.

He touched the six gold soul coins left in his pocket and muttered to himself, "Maybe I should find a way to make some money."

After putting the clothes back in the staff dormitory, he walked towards the west of the city.

This was the most chaotic street in Frost Leaf City. Dirty alleys, dilapidated houses, complex roads, idle gangsters, starving refugees—all kinds of reasons intertwined to make this a breeding ground for crime.

A skinny man with a sharp mouth and monkey-like cheeks looked greedily at Amon's clothes, which didn't look cheap. His Adam's apple bobbed, and he finally made a decision, tiptoeing closer.

Amon noticed his movements out of the corner of his eye, ignored him, and just thought about whether to slit his throat or pierce his heart if he tried to harm him.

Unexpectedly, the man didn't suddenly attack but bowed and scraped, saying, "Sir, is there anything I can do for you?"

"..."

Amon was silent for a moment, then said softly, "Yan Jin lives in this area, right? Do you know the exact location?"

"Little Qu Shua? I know, I know, sir, this..." He rubbed his palms together.

Amon understood and threw him two copper coins.

"Please, follow me."

After walking through several winding alleys, they arrived at a relatively well-preserved stone house.

"It's here."

Amon threw the skinny man two more copper coins, dismissed him, stepped forward, and knocked on the door.

"Who is it?" A crack opened in the door, and a small head peered out.

There was also a chain connecting the door to the frame, and the position of the small head was at an unexpected knee height.

Amon's condescending gaze collided with Yan Jin's upward gaze in the air, and the latter scratched her head with a sheepish smile, "Amon, what brings you here?"

"Aren't you going to invite me in?"

Yan Jin hesitated, unlocked the chain, and opened the door.

"You're quite cautious." Amon walked into the house.

"If I wasn't careful, I would have been swallowed whole, leaving nothing behind," Yan Jin shrugged.

A dark blue-haired boy brought two small stools and then retreated behind Yan Jin like a guard.

Amon noticed that there were several smaller children in the inner room, peeking out curiously. He chuckled, took out a bag of candy, and placed it on the small table, "Here, are these your eight brothers?"

"Ahaha..." Yan Jin scratched the back of her head somewhat embarrassedly. She noticed the children's eyes full of longing as they looked at the candy and waved, "Lei Yin, take the candy and take your younger siblings away, don't eavesdrop."

"Big Sis..." Lei Yin looked at Amon hesitantly, his eyes full of vigilance.

"Don't worry, he's a teacher at the academy."

"I understand." Lei Yin picked up the candy, walked into the inner room, and closed the thick wooden door.

"I've heard about you. I heard you rejected an invitation from a Soul Douluo?" Amon asked.

"Ah... that old man was a Soul Douluo? I only knew he was a big shot; it seems a bit of a pity." Even so, Yan Jin didn't seem the least bit regretful; she didn't regret her choice.

"Because of them?"

"Yes, if I became his disciple, I would have to go to Spirit Hall City. Although he promised to have the Spirit Hall in Frost Leaf City help take care of Lei Yin and the others, I'm worried. I can sense that he doesn't really value me that much, and he won't give my younger siblings any more care because of me. I find it hard to believe that the people he arranges to take care of them will be conscientious. They're too young, so I refused."

"So, if it were just you alone, you would have agreed to become his disciple? Are they really that important to you, to reject a bright future for them? You shouldn't be related by blood, right?" Amon adjusted his monocle.

"Very important... they're all from the same village. When we encountered bandits, all the adults in the village were killed, leaving only a few of us. Their parents gave their lives to protect us; I can't abandon them. Taking care of them until they come of age is my responsibility!"

Yan Jin said seriously, "So, teacher, can you really not teach me? I want to make their lives better."

"Stealing through these small means won't make their lives better," Amon shook his head. "One mistake can make you, and them, doomed forever."

Yan Jin looked at the young man in front of her, who didn't seem much older than herself, and felt that he might have had similar experiences. Those skillful stealing techniques must have been honed through a lot of practice, which made her feel a bit more empathetic.

"Then why are you here...?"

"Are you interested in joining me? In participating in the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament? Although I can't promise you more material help right now, I can take you to a bigger stage," Amon extended his hand, inviting her.

"Now?"

"Of course not. I don't have that strength yet. I've wasted a lot of years, and I need time to catch up. Similarly, you probably can't let go of your younger siblings.

"Five years. I will stay in this Frost Leaf City for five years. By then, you will have just graduated from the Junior Soul Master Academy, and your younger siblings will be even older than you are now. After properly settling them, we will go to the Advanced Soul Master Academy.

"And then find a way to participate in the next-to-next Soul Master Tournament, to prove ourselves on that world-renowned stage.

"In these five years, I will give you help on the path of the Soul Master, and I will also help take care of your younger siblings."

"It all sounds like good things. What do I have to give in return?" Yan Jin's eyes were filled with a bit of suspicion and vigilance.

"Didn't you want to become my disciple? Just consider me your teacher. I will arrange for you to do some things, of course, on the premise that you are willing," Amon smiled slightly.

"Then... okay."
