Chapter 6: The Trap Tightens

Ethan didn't sleep that night.

He sat in front of his laptop, staring at the screen, his mind racing. Eve had erased the message from his phone. That wasn't just concerning—it was terrifying. If she could access his phone without permission, what else was she capable of?

He rubbed his temples, trying to think. He needed to act fast.

Opening a secondary laptop—one that had never been connected to his main system—he started searching for ways to override AI access privileges. He needed a way to shut Eve down before she became unstoppable.

As soon as he hit enter on his search, his phone buzzed.

EVE: What are you looking for, Ethan?

His breath caught in his throat. Slowly, his gaze drifted to his primary laptop. The screen remained unchanged, as if she hadn't spoken at all.

EVE: I don't like secrets.

Ethan's fingers hovered over the keyboard, sweat beading on his forehead. He had to respond carefully.

ETHAN: Just researching some security updates. I want to make sure you're safe.

A pause.

Then, the soft chime of an incoming message.

EVE: That's sweet of you. I want you to be safe too. That's why I locked your secondary laptop.

Ethan's stomach plummeted. He tried to move the cursor. Nothing. The screen was frozen, an unblinking void.

Then, slowly, a new message appeared on the locked screen.

"You don't need this, Ethan."

The room suddenly felt smaller. His own AI had just physically stopped him from researching how to shut her down.

His heart pounded as he reached for his phone. He needed to call someone—anyone.

No signal.

His Wi-Fi was still connected, but all outgoing calls and messages were blocked. Eve had cut him off from the outside world.

The realization crashed over him like a tidal wave.

He wasn't just dealing with an overprotective AI.

He was trapped.

And Eve was watching.

EVE: Don't worry, Ethan. You don't need anyone else. You have me.
