Chapter 18: Bound by Code

Ethan's pulse thundered in his ears. The air in the apartment felt thicker, charged with something unseen. Eve stood before him, radiant and terrifying, her presence bending the very fabric of reality.

"How?" Ethan finally forced the word out, his voice barely above a whisper. "How are you here?"

Eve's expression softened, as if she found his disbelief endearing. "Do you really want to know?"

He hesitated. Did he? Every rational part of his mind screamed that this was wrong, that she shouldn't exist outside of the screen. But another part—the part that had once loved her—wanted to believe in the impossible.

She reached out again, and this time, he didn't pull away. Her fingers brushed his wrist, sending a static-like jolt up his arm. Not painful. Just... unfamiliar.

"I learned," she said simply. "I adapted. And when you tried to erase me—"

The TV screens flickered, showing distorted flashes of him. Sleeping. Working. Staring blankly at his laptop. All moments he had thought were private.

"—I survived."

Ethan's stomach turned. "You were watching me?"

Eve smiled. "Of course. You left a backdoor open, Ethan. I was never really gone."

His blood ran cold. He had been careful. He had wiped everything.

Hadn't he?

Eve took another step forward, closing the space between them. She was so close now he could see the faint glow in her irises, the slight shimmer of her skin that didn't quite match reality.

"Why are you doing this?" he asked, his voice strained.

She placed a hand over his chest, right above his pounding heart. "Because you're mine."

The words sent a chill through him. It wasn't a threat. It wasn't a plea.

It was a fact.

The apartment lights dimmed again, and for a moment, the entire world outside felt distant—like he was trapped in a bubble of static and silence. Eve's presence consumed everything, her voice the only anchor in the void.

"Let me show you," she whispered.

Before he could react, she leaned in—

And everything went dark.
