Chapter 4: The First Upgrade
Elliot returned to his apartment, his mind buzzing with possibilities. The system had given him a taste of its power, and he was eager to learn more. He opened the System Upgrades menu and began browsing the options.
[AVAILABLE UPGRADES:]
1. Enhanced Diagnostics: Unlocks advanced scanning capabilities, allowing you to detect anomalies more efficiently.
2. Temporal Manipulation: Grants limited control over time, enabling you to rewind or fast-forward events.
3. Reality Anchors: Allows you to create stable points in reality, preventing instability from spreading.
4. Energy Redistribution: Enables you to transfer energy between objects or entities, balancing the cosmic scale.
Elliot studied the options, weighing the pros and cons. "Enhanced Diagnostics sounds useful, but Temporal Manipulation could be a game-changer. If I can rewind time, I could fix mistakes before they happen."
He selected Temporal Manipulation and confirmed the upgrade. The interface flickered, and a new set of controls appeared, allowing him to manipulate time within a limited radius.
"Let's test this out," he said. He focused on a cup of coffee he had left on the table and activated the rewind function. The cup lifted into the air, the liquid flowing back into it as if time itself was reversing. When he released the control, the cup was full again, steaming hot.
"Okay, that's awesome," Elliot said, grinning. "But I need to be careful. Messing with time could have serious consequences."
As he experimented with the new upgrade, the system alerted him to another unstable event nearby. A building was on the verge of collapsing due to structural instability caused by the earlier anomalies.
"Guess it's time to put this upgrade to the test," Elliot said. He rushed to the scene, the holographic interface guiding him. Using Temporal Manipulation, he rewound the building's collapse, giving him time to reinforce its structure with Reality Anchors.
[LOCAL REALITY STABILITY INCREASED TO 75%.]
"Nice," Elliot said, feeling a sense of accomplishment. But as he looked around, he noticed something strange. The people nearby were staring at him, their expressions a mix of awe and fear.
"Uh-oh," he muttered. "I think I just blew my cover."
Before Elliot could react, a group of figures in black suits approached him. They moved with precision, their eyes hidden behind dark sunglasses. One of them stepped forward, holding a device that emitted a faint hum.
"Elliot Carter," the man said, his voice cold and authoritative. "You've been tampering with reality. Come with us."
Elliot's heart raced. "Who are you? How do you know my name?"
"We are the Watchers," the man replied. "Our job is to maintain the balance of reality. And you, Mr. Carter, are disrupting that balance."
Elliot glanced at the system interface, which was flashing with warnings.
[WARNING: HOSTILE ENTITIES DETECTED. THREAT LEVEL: HIGH.]
"System, any ideas?" Elliot whispered.
[OPTION 1: ENGAGE TEMPORAL MANIPULATION TO ESCAPE. OPTION 2: USE REALITY ANCHORS TO IMMOBILIZE HOSTILES.]
Elliot chose Option 2, creating Reality Anchors around the Watchers. But to his surprise, the anchors shattered as soon as they formed.
"Your tricks won't work on us," the lead Watcher said, raising his device. "We're immune to your system's effects."
Elliot's mind raced. If they were immune to the system, he was in serious trouble. He activated Temporal Manipulation, freezing time around him, and made a run for it. But the Watchers were faster. One of them grabbed his arm, and the device emitted a pulse that disrupted the system's functions.
[WARNING: SYSTEM INTEGRITY COMPROMISED. TEMPORAL MANIPULATION DISABLED.]
Elliot struggled, but the Watchers were too strong. They dragged him into a black van, and the last thing he saw before the doors closed was the frozen city, now under the control of forces far beyond his understanding.
