Evan continued speaking, sensing that his son might have been disappointed by the impossibility of becoming both a Magician and a Knight. He leaned forward, his tone softening.
"Son, it's not as if Knights can't use magic spells. We can," he explained. "But it's not the same. For a Knight, using magic is usually... well, pointless."
Ignis tilted his head, curious, so Evan elaborated. "Let's take the First-Tier Fireball spell, for example. If a One-Star Magician casts it with a certain amount of Mana, the Fireball would be about the size of a football. But if a Knight uses the exact same amount of Mana to cast the same spell, the Fireball would only be the size of an egg. Its power and size would be much weaker.
"And," Evan added, his voice firm, "if a Knight did want to cast a Fireball as big and powerful as a Magician's, they'd have to use ten times—or even more—Mana to do it. It's just inefficient. That's why most Knights focus on physical combat and techniques instead of magic. Do you understand now, son, why you can't be both a Knight and a Magician?"
Ignis nodded slowly, absorbing the information. "I understand, Dad."
Evan smiled with pride, seeing how quickly his son grasped such complex ideas. Alenna, standing nearby, beamed as well.
"Such a bright and curious child," she said warmly. "So, son, have you decided to become a Magician?"
Alenna, Evan, and the rest of the mansion staff had always assumed Ignis would choose the path of a Magician. His love of reading, his curiosity, and his tendency to ask questions—all hallmarks of a Magician's temperament—seemed to make the decision obvious.
But Ignis surprised them. He shook his head firmly. "Sorry to disappoint you, Mom, but I'm going to become a Knight."
Alenna's smile faltered ever so slightly, disappointment flickering in her eyes. She had hoped her son might follow in her footsteps. But before she could respond, Evan's reaction filled the air.
The stern Knight's face broke into a wide grin, and though he tried to maintain the dignity of his station, his joy was unmistakable. If he hadn't been so conscious of his image, he might have leapt into the air like an excited child.
"Yes!" Evan bellowed, his booming laugh echoing across the garden. "Yes, that's my son!"
Ignis smiled faintly at his father's enthusiasm.
Alenna crossed her arms, smirking slightly as she addressed her husband. "Okay, okay, don't get too excited, will you? We came here for a reason, remember?"
Evan blinked, her words snapping him out of his celebratory daze. He cleared his throat, regaining his composure, and nodded. Turning his attention to Ignis, he asked, "Son, how much do you know about our Count and the County?"
Ignis thought for a moment before replying, his voice steady. "I know a little. Our County is called Ravenwood, and it's ruled by Count Aleric Ravenwood. He has two wives and two children—an elder son from one wife and a younger daughter from the other. That's all I know."
Evan nodded, a hint of pride in his eyes. "You've got most of the basics, son, which is good. But let me tell you a little more."
He leaned back slightly, his tone taking on the weight of a story long held. "I first met Count Aleric when I was 18, on the battlefield. Back then, we were comrades. As a noble, he was the captain of a hundred-man unit, while I was leading a ten-man squad. We fought side by side, and over the years, a bond formed between us.
"A few years later, he invited me to join him. By then, I had already met your mother. She was a healer in the army—a gentle, skilled woman who stole my heart. We fell in love and decided to marry. At that time, Aleric was still the heir to Ravenwood County, but tragedy struck when his father passed away. As the rightful heir, he became the Count.
"When your mother and I were about to wed, we made a decision—to settle in Ravenwood County. We wanted a stable, peaceful life where we could raise a family. The Count offered us not just a place to stay but also generous terms. He named me Grand Knight Commander of Ravenwood County—a position of great honor. Of course," Evan added with a slight grin, "I had the strength to back it up.
"At that time, I was already a 4-Star Knight. That might not sound extraordinary in larger kingdoms, but here, in the Lunar Kingdom, it's a significant rank. The strongest Knight in the kingdom is Duke Ethan Wintershire of Wintershire, a 6-Star Knight.
"And," Evan said, his voice firm with determination, "I'm confident that with my talent and effort, I'll reach the rank of 5-Star Knight in the next four or five years."
Evan's eyes gleamed as he finished speaking, his pride as both a Knight and a father evident. Ignis listened intently, absorbing every word, and for a moment, he could see the path his father had walked—one paved with courage, loyalty, and ambition.
