Chapter 13: The Ritual Site

With all three ingredients in hand—the shard of the Void, the celestial tear, and the phoenix's heart—we returned to the academy. The final step was to perform the ritual described in the scroll, but it required a specific location: the **Sanctum of Balance**, an ancient site where the energies of light and darkness converged.

The Sanctum was located deep within the **Ethereal Forest**, a mystical woodland shrouded in perpetual twilight. The journey there was eerie, the trees whispering secrets as we passed, their leaves glowing faintly in the dim light.

"This place gives me the creeps," I muttered, clutching the ingredients tightly.

*"Relax, Master,"* Skully said, perched on my shoulder. *"It's just a forest. What's the worst that could happen?"*

As if on cue, a shadowy figure emerged from the trees, its glowing eyes fixed on us. It was a **wraith**, a spirit bound to the forest by ancient magic. It let out a low, guttural growl, its form shifting and twisting like smoke.

"Skully, you had to ask," I groaned, raising my staff.

*"My bad,"* Skully said, hopping off my shoulder. *"I'll handle this."*

The wraith lunged at us, but Skully intercepted it, his rune glowing brightly as he unleashed a burst of golden energy. The wraith screeched in pain, its form dissolving into mist.

*"See? Nothing to worry about,"* Skully said, grinning.

But the wraith wasn't alone. More shadowy figures emerged from the trees, their glowing eyes fixed on us. We were surrounded.

"Skully, we need to get to the Sanctum," I said, my voice trembling. "We can't fight all of them."

*"Then we run,"* Skully replied, grabbing my hand and pulling me forward. *"Follow me!"*

We bolted through the forest, the wraiths hot on our heels. Skully's rune provided a faint light, guiding us through the twisting paths. The trees seemed to close in around us, their whispers growing louder, but we didn't stop.

Finally, we burst into a clearing, the Sanctum of Balance standing at its center. It was a circular stone platform, covered in ancient runes and surrounded by towering pillars. The air was thick with energy, the boundary between light and darkness palpable.

"This is it," I said, panting. "The ritual site."

The wraiths stopped at the edge of the clearing, their forms flickering as if repelled by the Sanctum's power. They let out one final, frustrated screech before retreating into the forest.

*"Looks like we're safe,"* Skully said, hopping onto the stone platform. *"For now, anyway."*
