Chapter 37: The Flickering Rune

The days after the Void Serpent's defeat were strange. The academy buzzed with celebration, but I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. Skully, my ever-enthusiastic partner, seemed… quieter. His rune, which had always glowed with a steady golden light, now flickered unpredictably, sometimes tinged with a faint red hue. It wasn't just the rune, either. He'd pause mid-sentence, his eye sockets narrowing as if listening to something I couldn't hear.

"Skully," I said one evening as we sat in the dormitory, "what's going on with you? You've been acting weird ever since we got back."

He hesitated, his rune dimming slightly. *"I don't know, Master. It's like… there's a voice in my head. It's faint, but it's there. And it's getting louder."*

I frowned, my stomach twisting. "A voice? What kind of voice?"

*"I don't know,"* he admitted, his tone uncharacteristically solemn. *"It's not the Void Serpent. It's something else. Something… older."*

I leaned forward, my concern growing. "Is it the Prism? Is it affecting you?"

Skully shook his head. *"No, it's not the Prism. It's… me. Or maybe it's the rune. I can't tell anymore."*

I didn't like the sound of that. Skully had always been so sure of himself, so confident. To see him uncertain was unsettling. "We need to figure this out," I said firmly. "If something's wrong, we'll fix it. Together."

Skully's rune flickered, the faint red light growing brighter for a moment before fading. *"Thanks, Master. I don't know what I'd do without you."*
