We decided to seek answers in the academy's archives, a vast library filled with ancient tomes and forgotten knowledge. If there was any record of Skully's rune or the voice in his head, it would be here.
The archives were quiet, the air thick with the scent of old parchment and dust. Skully hopped onto a table, his rune glowing faintly as he scanned the shelves. *"Where do we even start, Master? There's so much here."*
"We start with the rune," I said, pulling a heavy tome from a nearby shelf. "If it's connected to something ancient, there might be records of it in the older texts."
We spent hours poring over the books, searching for any mention of runes, ancient beings, or mysterious voices. It was tedious work, but Skully's occasional quips kept me from losing my mind.
*"Hey, Master,"* he said at one point, holding up a book with a crumbling cover. *"This one says that ancient runes were used to bind powerful spirits to objects. Think that's what happened to me?"*
I frowned, taking the book from him. "Maybe. But if that's the case, why are you… you? You're not exactly an object."
Skully shrugged, his rune flickering. *"Maybe I'm a really fancy object."*
I rolled my eyes but couldn't help smiling. "You're definitely something."
As the hours passed, we began to piece together fragments of information. The rune on Skully's ribcage matched descriptions of an ancient binding ritual, one used to seal away powerful entities. But the details were vague, and the texts were filled with contradictions.
"This doesn't make sense," I muttered, flipping through another book. "If the rune is a binding, why is it affecting you now? And what's this voice you're hearing?"
Skully hesitated, his rune glowing faintly. *"What if… what if the binding is breaking, Master? What if whatever's inside me is trying to get out?"*
I looked at him, my stomach twisting. "If that's true, we need to figure out what's inside you. And fast."
Skully nodded, his eye sockets narrowing. *"There's one more place we can look. The **Chamber of Echoes**. It's a place where the academy stores artifacts too dangerous to be left in the open. If there's anything about the rune, it'll be there."*
I hesitated. The Chamber of Echoes was off-limits to students, and for good reason. The artifacts stored there were powerful and unpredictable. But if it held the answers we needed, we didn't have a choice.
"Alright," I said, closing the book. "Let's go."
