Chapter 45: The Whispering Shadows

The academy felt different after the binding ritual. The air was lighter, the halls quieter, but an undercurrent of unease lingered. Skully's rune, though stable for now, still flickered faintly with that ominous red light. He tried to brush it off, but I could tell something was bothering him.

One evening, as we sat in the dormitory, Skully suddenly froze, his rune pulsing erratically. *"Master… do you hear that?"*

I frowned, listening intently. At first, there was nothing. Then, faintly, I heard it—a whisper, soft and indistinct, like a voice carried on the wind. "What is that?"

*"It's the voice,"* Skully said, his tone uneasy. *"It's back. But it's… different. It's not just in my head anymore."*

The whispers grew louder, echoing through the room. Shadows seemed to stretch and twist, forming shapes that danced at the edge of my vision. I reached for my staff, my heart pounding. "Skully, what's going on?"

*"I don't know,"* he replied, his rune glowing brighter. *"But it's not good."*

The shadows coalesced into a figure—a tall, shadowy form with glowing red eyes. It spoke, its voice a low, guttural growl. *"You cannot contain me forever."*

Skully stepped forward, his rune flaring with golden light. *"Who are you? What do you want?"*

The figure laughed, a sound that sent chills down my spine. *"I am what was sealed away. I am the darkness within the light. And I will be free."*

Before I could react, the figure lunged at Skully. He dodged, his agility saving him from the shadowy claws, but the attack left a deep gash in the wall. The figure vanished as quickly as it appeared, the whispers fading into silence.

I turned to Skully, my heart racing. "What was that?"

He hesitated, his rune flickering. *"I think… it's the entity. Or what's left of it. The binding ritual weakened it, but it's not gone. It's trying to break free."*

I clenched my fists, my mind racing. "We need to figure out how to stop it. For good."

Skully nodded, his eye sockets narrowing. *"But how? We don't even know what it is."*

"We'll find out," I said firmly. "Together."
