Chapter 33: The Meaning of a Hero

After receiving the check for one thousand dollars from Tony, Jason left the Stark Industries Building accompanied by Pepper.

Jason heard the conversation between Tony and Pepper just now. If he remembered correctly, Tony Stark was kidnapped by armed terrorists called Freedom Fighters when he was demonstrating the latest Jericho missile to the US military in Afghanistan.

Tony, who had always believed that the weapons he made were used to protect the country, didn't know until that time.

It turns out that their weapons are not only used to protect the people, but also become accomplices of executioners who cause massive casualties in war-torn countries.

From that moment on, Tony truly began his transformation and started to shoulder the responsibilities given to him like a hero.

Sitting in the car, Jason smiled at the rearview mirror. "Without the ups and downs in life, Tony Stark is just a dandy genius after all."

It took Jason and Peter two nights to give away the drug money they got from the drug dealers.

Many orphanages and welfare organizations in New York have received donations from them to varying degrees. Although it is generous, it is still a good thing.

However, Jason was still depressed about something, because the previous fight in the underground garage was covered up by the Stanich family.

Neither the media nor the Internet mentioned this matter, which resulted in Jason gaining very little reputation, because only a small number of people in the Stanich family knew about it.

Other ordinary people in society don't know what Jason did.

What makes Jason even more depressed is the act of donating money to charity. The media in this era are all the same. They hope for explosive and impactful news.

For example, murders, celebrity gossip, or politician scandals. The truly positive news is mostly mentioned in passing.

Because modern people put entertainment first and fast food to death. They no longer like those things, and many people have dark speculations in their minds.

Is there a hidden PY transaction behind every good deed? Is there a team behind every person who does good deeds to hype it up?

In this situation, reports about good people and good deeds are becoming less and less, and fewer and fewer people are paying attention to them. Instead, news about the dark side is on the rise.

Various conspiracy theories are rampant in this impetuous era, and social news is becoming more and more violent. This donation to the New York welfare organization did not cause much of a stir.

The news only mentioned this incident in the corners, and it did not receive much attention at all. This time, Jason only gained a few hundred points of reputation after his life and death.

Jason couldn't help but sigh, does this world really need heroes? In this busy and complicated world, everyone only cares about themselves.

Being a hero is not a normal profession. You don't punch in on time, get paid at the end of the month, or get bonuses for overtime. Of course, you won't get work-related injury medical insurance compensation if you get injured.

Everything Jason did was done for the purpose of making himself stronger, but he also hoped to bring some positive energy to others, and he hoped that his actions would be recognized by others.

On a high-rise building in Queens, Jason sat on the edge of the roof, watching the endless stream of vehicles in New York City at night.

The headlights of these vehicles move with the vehicles, like a colorful river, rushing and roaring in this colorful city.

"Nightcrawler, what are you thinking about?" Peter had changed into a better-looking outfit, a red and blue tights, and the prototype of Spider-Man.

The two of them kept a low profile these past two days because they were avoiding the Stanich family's search. So except for Peter occasionally taking action to solve a few petty thieves to practice his skills, they kept a low profile.

Jason did nothing at all except giving money to those welfare organizations.

"Peter, have you ever thought about what you have truly paid as a hero?" Jason sorted out his thoughts, organized his words and said.

"We gave up our comfortable lives in our own homes to stop crime in the dark," Jason said, a little confused. "We donated most of the money we received to people in need in this society."

"But every time we take action, we have to risk injury or even our lives." Peter looked at Jason with some concern, but Jason continued speaking.

"Even so, our behavior is hard to gain the approval of more people. Look at what is reported in the news now." Jason said, feeling a little uncomfortable.

"Tom Cruise is secretly dating his new girlfriend, Kardashian is pregnant, and Tony Stark invited the twin girls on the cover of Playboy Magazine in August to go to the hotel together! And we donated money to so many welfare organizations in New York, but there is no news!"

"Haha~!" Peter suddenly laughed out loud. "Man, I thought it was no big deal! Turns out you're just jealous~haha."

"I didn't!" Jason retorted with a frown. "Don't lie buddy, you're just jealous!" Peter said after calming down his laughter.

"You're jealous that you haven't received more attention despite doing so much!" Peter said in a tone of someone who has experienced it. "I know this feeling very well."

"I have two good friends. One is smart, talented and comes from a wealthy family. The other is friendly, good at cooking and very handsome." Peter told Jason, who was dressed as a night walker, about his inner thoughts.

"The three of us are good friends, but I'm always the one ignored when I'm with them." Peter said in a relaxed tone.

"I study very hard and want to show myself more in front of my classmates and friends, but they always steal the limelight." Peter continued. "I am obviously the best student in the school. I obviously try hard to show myself, but why can't I get more attention?"

"My rich friends would become the center of attention whenever they showed up, and many people would rush to curry favor with them. My friends who could cook would be worshipped as heroes by a group of girls just because they had some conflicts with the bullies on the basketball team. I was very, very jealous of them!"

Jason never knew that Peter had such thoughts in his heart. "But later I gradually understood that they were being noticed not because they wanted to be noticed." Peter said slowly.

"It's just that people are naturally attracted to those who are different, like movie stars or super tycoons." Peter is now guiding Jason like a life mentor.

"As with everything we do, the reason we donate to charity is because people are more interested in what they can never be, or what they can never accomplish."

"My uncle once told me that we help others not to get praise, but because we have the ability to help others and that person happens to need help." Peter continued to instill spiritual chicken soup into Jason.

"Do you remember the donation we made helping him by doing this? If there is no news report on what we did, are we going to watch an eight-year-old child die in a hospital bed due to lack of money for surgery?" Peter has always been a big boy with a sense of justice and a sunny heart.

In his eyes, helping others is more important than getting praise from others. As a man who is actually an uncle in his heart, Jason actually cares more about the results and the recognition of others.

But Peter's sincerity still touched him a little, and his mood improved a lot. He might really be jealous of those people in his heart. Maybe, as Peter said, he helped others only because he had the ability to help those in need.

Being a hero is only because you have the ability to be a hero. Sometimes people need to learn to enjoy the process more, not just the result.

"Shall we have a race?" Peter suddenly suggested. "Then do you dare not use spider silk?" Jason asked with a smile.

"Spider silk is a part of Spider-Man. You are scared, buddy. You are afraid that you can't outrun me, Spider-Man!" Peter saw that Jason felt a little guilty.

Now that Peter has spider silk and can swing in the city, Jason really can't match him in speed. But he still spoke up. "Ha~ Then let's give it a try!"

After saying that, he took a quick step and started running. "Whoever reaches the base first is the winner! The loser will have to buy a midnight snack tomorrow!"
