Chapter 4: Meeting the Draylen Family

Nate took a deep breath, trying to calm the whirlwind of thoughts racing through his mind. The reality that he was now in Kael Draylen's body was slowly sinking in, but he had no time to dwell on the strangeness of it all. He needed to familiarize himself with his new surroundings and the people who now considered him family.

Later that morning, Lina guided Nate through the grand corridors of the manor, leading him to the dining hall where the Draylen family was gathered for breakfast. The room was opulent, with high ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and a long table adorned with an array of sumptuous dishes. As they entered, all eyes turned toward him.

At the head of the table sat Lord Darius Draylen, the stern and imposing patriarch of the family. His presence commanded respect, and his piercing blue eyes seemed to scrutinize Nate's every move. Beside him was Lady Evelina Draylen, a graceful and dignified woman with an air of quiet authority.

On one side of the table, Nate spotted a familiar face—Elara, his adoptive sister, who had always been a bright light in Kael's life during their childhood. She looked up and gave him an indifferent nod, her demeanor distant and reserved.

Lord Darius spoke first, his tone measured and authoritative. "Kael, it's good to see you joining us for breakfast. We have much to discuss."

Nate nodded, trying to maintain his composure. "Good morning, Father, Mother. Elara," he greeted each of them in turn.

Lady Evelina gestured for him to take a seat. "Please, Kael, sit down and eat. You must be hungry."

As Nate took his seat, he couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. He knew he had to navigate this conversation carefully, drawing on Kael's memories and his own instincts to avoid arousing suspicion.

Lord Darius wasted no time in addressing the matter at hand. "Kael, we have high expectations for you. Despite your... challenges, we believe you have the potential to bring honor to our family. You must continue your training and studies diligently."

Nate nodded, his mind racing to find the right words. "I understand, Father. I will do my best to meet your expectations."

Lord Darius's expression hardened. "Your best has not been enough, Kael. You have shown little progress, and it is a disgrace to our name. You must do better, especially with the academy entrance exams approaching. You and Elara are expected to excel."

The mention of the academy made Nate's heart race. He recalled his memories from the game in his previous life, where the prestigious academy trained young nobles in the arts of magic and combat. It was a place of rigorous competition, where only the best could thrive. The academy was known for its grueling entrance exams and high standards, and it was a critical stepping stone for anyone seeking to make a name for themselves.

"I won't disappoint you, Father. I'll work harder," Nate promised, feeling the weight of the expectations pressing down on him.

"You say that, but actions speak louder than words," Lord Darius retorted. "You must prove yourself worthy of the Draylen name. The academy will not tolerate mediocrity."

Lady Evelina's expression softened slightly. "Kael, we only want what's best for you. We believe in your potential, and we know you can overcome any obstacles. The academy is an opportunity for you to shine."

Elara remained silent, her gaze fixed on her plate. Nate wondered what had caused the distance between them, but he knew now was not the time to address it.

As the meal continued, the conversation shifted to more mundane topics, allowing Nate to observe the dynamics of the family. Lord Darius was clearly the authority figure, while Lady Evelina provided a sense of balance and support. Elara's quiet demeanor hinted at deeper emotions that Nate couldn't yet discern.

After breakfast, Lord Darius excused himself to attend to his duties, and Lady Evelina left to oversee the household affairs. Nate remained seated, feeling the weight of his father's expectations pressing down on him.

As the day went on, Nate familiarized himself with the manor and its inhabitants. He interacted with the staff, learning their names and responsibilities, and sought to understand the intricacies of the Draylen family's expectations.

With each passing day, Nate grew more confident in his role as Kael Draylen. He knew that this was just the beginning of his journey, and he was resolved to navigate the challenges ahead with determination and resilience.
