CHAPTER 38

I let out a frustrated sigh, my body stiff against his hold. Matteo's grip was firm, almost possessive, as if he thought that if he held on tightly enough, he could keep me here forever. His warmth radiated against my back, but it only made me feel colder inside.

“Matteo, let me go.” My voice was quiet, but there was an unmistakable edge to it.

His fingers flexed against my waist before finally loosening just a fraction. “Where do you think you’re running off to?” His voice was husky from sleep, but there was amusement laced within it. “The night was good, wasn’t it? So why are you trying to escape like a thief?”

I clenched my jaw. “I’m not escaping. I just want to be alone.”

His grip tightened again, this time firmer, his lips brushing against my shoulder. “Alone? That’s a funny word coming from you. I thought we had already crossed that line, baby.”

I turned my head slightly, glaring at him. “Don’t call me that.”
