CHAPTER 53

I zipped my backpack, the weight of it barely registering compared to the heaviness in my chest. It was morning, and I was getting ready for college. My limbs ached, sore from another night of forced affection, and my heart... my heart just felt numb. Everything around me felt mechanical. Routine. I was living, but barely.

I slung the backpack over my shoulder and walked out of the bedroom. The house was silent, like a ticking time bomb holding its breath. As I descended the stairs, I spotted Matteo at the entrance. He was leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed, wearing that usual unreadable expression.

"Ready?" he asked.

I didn’t speak. I only nodded.

His jaw tensed, his eyes narrowing. "Your silence is starting to annoy me."

I hissed under my breath, adjusting the strap of my bag. "I’m just tired," I murmured and walked past him, getting into the car.

He got into the driver’s seat beside me and slammed the door shut. "Then just go back to bed."
