CHAPTER 11: CONFLICTERS

Christmas Day came to bring thrills and warmth into Clara's house. Everywhere flowy

and feathery decorations, with every room bathed in the aroma of melting baked

goods, infused with life. joyous atmosphere. Clara woke up early, filled with the

anticipation of the day ahead.

“Mommy! It’s Christmas!” Lily exclaimed, bouncing on the bed, her eyes sparkling

with glee.

“Yes, it is! Let’s see what Santa brought us!” Clara grinned, embracing her daughter

in one of those hugs that she was sure would stay in memory forever.

Racing into the living room, they found the Christmas tree twinkling with lights, with

presents piled underneath, all decked out in masterfully wrapped bows. Clara's heart

swelled against the familiar sight; for the first time in a long time, she felt really at

home.

"Look at all this!" Lily shrieked, diving for the nearest present. Clara joined her,

laughter spilling through the room as they tore through wrapping paper, squealing in

delight over each gift.

“Santa must have loved you this year!” Clara giggled, marveling at Lily’s sheer joy.

After the excitement of unwrapping presents settled, Clara prepared breakfast—a

special holiday tradition that brought warmth and comfort. The day seemed perfect,

filled with laughter, gifts, and precious moments. However, as time passed, Clara

could feel an undercurrent of danger lurking beneath the surface.

Around midday, as they gathered for a family lunch, Clara noticed her ex-husband

was included in the plans. Mark had invited him, believing that keeping things

amicable would benefit everyone

involved—especially Lily. Clara’sheart sank at the prospect.

“Clara, he’s coming to join us today,” Mark announced, his voice casual as they set

the table.

“What?” Clara's eyes filled with surprise. "That's the best idea of the year! Not!"

"Come on, he wants to be part of Lily's life.. It’s only fair to give him a chance,

especially on Christmas,” Mark defended, his brows furrowed.

Clara felt torn, her heart racing at the thought of her ex being part of their holiday. “I

understand, but what if things get tense? I don’t want to ruin the day for Lily. This is

her special time.”

“Trust me, Clara. We’re all adults here. I believe he can behave,” Mark reassured her,

though Clara couldn’t shake the feeling of dread creeping over her. After some

deliberation, Clara reluctantly agreed, though uncertainty suffocated her excitement

as they waited for him to arrive. as her ex-husband, Derek, walked in through the

door, a knot formed in the pit of Clara’s stomach. “Merry Christmas!” he flashed her

a crooked smile,and she immediately understood she was dealing with a rat. Lily
