The faint spark of light above Kael's palm flickered and died, leaving him in darkness once more. He stared at his hand, his heart pounding with a mix of exhilaration and disbelief. The pendant had worked—it had given him a glimpse of the power he had always been denied. But as the initial rush of excitement faded, questions began to swirl in his mind.
What is this pendant? Where did it come from? And why does it respond to me?
Kael glanced around the dormitory, making sure Aria was still asleep. Her soft breathing filled the room, a steady rhythm that reassured him she wouldn't wake. He needed answers, and he couldn't risk anyone finding out about the pendant—not yet.
Slipping out of bed, Kael grabbed his satchel and quietly made his way to the door. The academy was eerily quiet at night, the halls illuminated by the faint glow of Aether crystals embedded in the walls. Kael moved quickly, his footsteps echoing softly as he navigated the labyrinthine corridors.
He had heard rumours of a hidden library deep within the academy, a place where forbidden knowledge and ancient texts were kept. If there was any information about the pendant, that's where it would be.
The library was located in the oldest part of the academy, its entrance concealed behind a tapestry in the grand hall. Kael had overheard a group of upperclassmen talking about it during dinner, and he had memorised the directions. Now, standing in front of the tapestry, he hesitated.
What if I get caught?
The thought sent a shiver down his spine, but he pushed it aside. He had come too far to turn back now. Taking a deep breath, Kael pulled the tapestry aside, revealing a narrow staircase leading down into the darkness.
The air grew colder as he descended, the faint hum of Aether crystals growing louder with each step. At the bottom of the staircase, he found himself in a vast, dimly lit chamber filled with towering shelves of books and scrolls. The air was thick with the scent of parchment and dust, and the only sound was the soft rustling of pages as if the library itself were alive.
Kael's eyes widened as he took in the sight. The hidden library was even more impressive than he had imagined. Shelves stretched as far as the eye could see, their contents ranging from ancient tomes to fragile scrolls. In the centre of the room stood a massive Aether crystal, its glow casting eerie shadows on the walls.
"This is it," Kael whispered, his voice barely audible.
He began to search the shelves, his fingers brushing against the spines of countless books. Most of the titles were in languages he couldn't understand, but he kept looking, driven by a sense of urgency.
After what felt like hours, Kael found a section dedicated to ancient relics and artifacts. His heart raced as he pulled a dusty tome from the shelf, its cover adorned with intricate runes. He flipped through the pages, his eyes scanning the text for any mention of a pendant like his.
And then he saw it.
A detailed illustration of a pendant identical to the one around his neck, accompanied by a passage written in an ancient script. Kael's hands trembled as he read the translation scrawled in the margins:
"The Aetherial Pendant—a relic of immense power, capable of absorbing and storing Aether. Forged by the ancients, it is said to choose its bearer, granting them the ability to surpass their limits. Beware, for its power comes at a cost."
Kael's breath caught in his throat. The pendant wasn't just a tool—it was a relic of immense power, one that had chosen him. But what did the warning mean? What cost was he risking by using it?
Before he could ponder further, a voice broke the silence.
"What are you doing here?"
Kael spun around, his heart leaping into his throat. Standing in the shadows was a girl with piercing violet eyes and silver hair that shimmered in the dim light. She wore the dark robes of the Shadow Class, her expression a mix of curiosity and suspicion.
"I—I was just—" Kael stammered, clutching the book to his chest.
The girl stepped closer, her gaze flicking to the pendant around his neck. "That's an Aetherial Pendant," she said, her voice low and measured. "Do you have any idea what you're messing with?"
Kael's mind raced. He didn't know this girl, but something about her felt... different. She wasn't mocking him or looking down on him like the others. Instead, she seemed genuinely concerned.
"I found it in the Aetherial Forest," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "I don't know what it is, but it's the only reason I can manipulate Aether at all."
The girl studied him for a moment, her expression unreadable. Then she sighed and held out her hand. "Give me the book."
Kael hesitated but handed it over. The girl flipped through the pages, her eyes scanning the text with practised ease. After a moment, she looked up, her gaze meeting his.
"My name is Seraphina Dusk," she said. "And if you want to survive this academy, you're going to need my help."
