"Get out! Brake!" shouted Kenji across the torrential downpour thumping at the windshield. It was absorbed by the beat of rain pouring outside as the windshield wipers passed back and forth against a rock-solid downpour; neon memories blurred into stripes as his heart raced in tandem with fighting the wheel from left to right.
Through the noise of the rain came a rude shout from the other car:
"I'm awfully sorry!" Then came the light, bright as brilliance, and sound, which ripped metal apart and shattered glass. In utter chaos, he barely heard himself wailing from instinct, "No, please…" Darkness engulfed him at once.
When Kenji opened his eyes again, he was not on a hospital bed but lying on soft grass soaked with fresh dew below streaks of indigo and gold. Instead, he heard cherry blossoms rustle gently, cutting off the sound of the city. Disoriented, he sat up and muttered,
Kenji: "Where… where am I?"
There came an answer from the midst of swirling mist, a soft yet resonant voice.
Tsukiyomi (emerging in luminous robes): "Kenji Saito, welcome to Eldoria."
Kenji: "Eldoria? I must be dreaming. Who are you?" His voice trembled with disbelief.
Tsukiyomi smiled, a smile chosen with utmost sweetness and carrying age-long wisdom.
Tsukiyomi: "I am Tsukiyomi, a guide and protector in this realm. You were permitted to have a second chance. Although weak, you should know that your mind is your greatest asset here."
Kenji frowned; he was still grappling with shock.
Kenji: "A second chance? I would never... There was an accident; I'm just an ordinary boy. How am I even relevant?"
Tsukiyomi's voice stayed soothing but firm.
Tsukiyomi: "Every soul has its reason to exist, Kenji. Magic and human ingenuity combine to dictate fate here in Eldoria. Come, let us walk. There is much for you to learn."
They started onto a path lined by ancient stone lanterns, and her gaze darted around, with Kenji keeping his wary eye on the glowing carvings and the mysterious forest beyond. The rustling of creatures he could not see seemed to echo nearby: a furtive goblin scuffle, the squelch of slime in a pool hidden somewhere, far away even the roar of a dragon.
When they walked for some time, the road passed through a village teeming with activity. Stalls were filled with exotic wares where vendors' voices clamored, children's laughter echoed, and elders shared legends under snapping banners. Amid this brilliant chaos, one figure caught Kenji's attention—a serious priestess standing by a fountain, her stare piercing yet guarded.
She stepped forward and addressed him directly:
Aiko: "You there! You don't look like you belong. Who are you?"
Kenji felt out of place; he was still stunned by what had happened to him minutes ago.
Kenji: "I'm Kenji Saito... I—I don't understand what's happening. I was in an accident, and now I'm here... in this strange place."
With narrowed eyes, Aiko assessed him.
Aiko: "Usually one doesn't come back to life from an accident, Kenji. There is something hidden in Eldoria, and so have you. If you want to find out more, then do follow me."
As they made their way past a village of modest size, Aiko continued to speak yet more slowly:
Aiko: "Just a little haven in the vast expanse of a lawless place, and its safety is fast becoming unreliable. Dark powers are at large in the nearby woody hills, awakened by some inscrutable ancient magic."
Kenji hesitated for a while, somewhere between curious and afraid, then eventually spoke:
Kenji: "Dark forces? I don't think I fit much the physical fighter. I can't really... I'm not really very good, you know?"
Aiko hesitated once more, then chose another, lighter route.
Aiko: "Strength is certainly not to be judged merely by physical ability; here, intellect, perception, the art of strategy, and quick thinking can become your biggest weapons. Trust me, you're going to need that wit to survive."
Beyond the clearing, right at the heart of the village, a resinous fire burned, casting warm light onto maybe one dozen or so smiling faces seated on the semicircular benches lining the wide stone patio. After the introductions and reintroductions had come laughing and sweet reminiscences of previous experiences shared together among the villagers.
The proud figure silhouetted against the flames was tall, with flames glinting off the sword held in his hand, which he thrust forth aggressively for the handshake:
"My name is Ryota; honor is my shield. Welcome, Kenji. Together we shall fight the darkness."
Then came an acrobat in black leather, grinning roguishly:
"I'm Mei. Don't be fooled by his quiet demeanor; I've seen sharp minds turn the tides on even the strongest opponents. You might just be our trump card."
Haruto was calm, tall, and penetrating, introducing himself:
"I am Haruto. The secrets of Eldoria are deep and deadly; your insight may be the only way to maneuver through them."
Takeshi, the beastman warrior; Sora, the fleet-of-foot archer; Miyu, who is gentle and healing; Kazuki, the calculating strategist; Hiroshi, the hard-learned blacksmith; and Yuki, a slippery scout; rebellious mage Nao, Ren, the battle-worn fighter, as well as Ayane, the determined warrior. Their introductions weave into a strong foundation of hope and determination.
The introductions over, merry conversations were drawn by the flickering flame. The villagers, who had earlier been watching them through wary eyes, were now listening in as whispers grew louder about the doom that awaited them.
Ryota (his voice grave): "There has been troublesome news from the forest. Goblins, slimes even dragons. Dark forces gather."
Haruto: "Eldoria is not for the coward. So we must gather for and prepare for the battles that await."
Kenji (still under the burden of newfound responsibilities) interjected:
"But...what could I do to help out in a fight with someone like me-someone who is not strong enough physically?"
He turned to him; Aiko's voice was daring but comforting:
"Kenji, strength is not mere brawn. It's mind. Today, your quick thinking saved a merchant from goblin mischief. I believe you have something to contribute."
"I remember you distracting them goblins earlier," Mei said with a short chuckle. "That shiny thing was...something else!"
Then Kenji felt a warm feeling wash through him: a humorous kind of pride mixed with uncertainty.
"I...I thought that might work. I'm still learning."
Kazuki (more vehemently): "It is your learning that makes a strategist. Our enemies will have no mercy-so must we."
Conversation continued, and with that rose commotion from afar. Suddenly, the peace of the night was rent asunder by a woman's chilling scream: "Goblins are invading the marketplace! Help! shouted a villager from outside.
Then they all were up and running. Aiko picked her staff and turned to Kenji. "Kenji, we need you. Hurry up and think of how you could help us."
Kenji's eyes were now darting all around. There was one stall out there with a row of twinkling ornaments. Kenji: "I have got an idea. Those goblins look like they are attracted to shiny things. We can lure them from the market; they will surely follow the stall instead."
Raising an eyebrow with Aiko on the other end, Aiko: "And you really think that will work?"
Kenji (with confidence): "It's worth a try. Let's go do it together."
And so they hurriedly headed toward the stall. When they got there, a pack of snarling goblins came roaring out of the forest, eyes set on the scattered wares of the merchant. One climbed onto a cart and knocked off a whole lot of them.
Merchant (in panic): "My goods--anybody, help!"
Aiko stepped forward, staff raised high. Aiko (commanding): "Stand back, everyone. Kenji, now!"
Kenji rushed to the stall while calling out in a loud, ringing voice: Kenji: "Hey, over here, you filthy little pests! Look at these shiny treasures!"
The goblins' attention was instantly diverted toward that announcement. They scampered along low, chattering voices to the new source of light and color.
GOBLIN LEADER (in guttural tones): "Shiny... treasure!"
In the meanwhile, the rest of the goblins were still prowling within the marketplace, but then they quickly fell under Aiko and a handful of the other warriors.
Now that the immediate threat had ended, the villagers burst into a round of applause in appreciation.
Back at the fire, Ryota was thumping Kenji on the back, guffawing. Ryota: "Well done, Kenji! Quick wit saves the day again."
Mei added teasingly: "A sword is useless; a brain like that is the only tool needed."
Kenji shyly smiled as uncertainty began to give way to a flicker of pride.
Kenji: I guess... I'm just getting started. I need to learn more."
Aiko's gaze softened as she inspected him. Aiko said, "Today you showed that the least likely champion could become the most powerful companion. But remember, this is only the beginning." "Even worse than these goblins are the dark forces beginning to form around our forest."
Haruto (solemnly): "True. An ancient evil stirs, thus also forbidden magic and treacherous paths."
This excited Kenji and flickered his eye with determination hearing this. Kenji: "I'm not the strongest, but I swear, whatever it takes, I'll protect Eldoria. I'll train, learn, and fight with every ounce of my mind."
Aiko nodded slowly. Aiko: "That's the spirit. Tomorrow begins our training." Each of us brings something unique to this fight. Let us continue the momentum together.
Voices low and earnest, the group has shrunk down into smaller circles. A quiet corner; Kenji and Aiko were left alone for a brief moment:
Aiko (whispers): "Kenji, I must say, I'm not fond of you from the beginning. But you've really proven something tonight. Still, what is ahead of you is very treacherous; your tests are going to be things you cannot fathom just yet."
Kenji gazes at her, his expression earnest.
Kenji: "I know. I'm scared, but I'm willing to do what has to be done. Ordinary, I'm afraid, is no longer an option for me-I have a commitment here."
Drawing with an open challenge and understanding, Aiko said, "Your Sacrifice isn't only for fighting but thinking and making tactics. I hope you are ready to make those decisions down the line; the enemy can be clever, and oftentimes-it's the tiniest misstep that could be fatal."
Kenji: "I'll never let you, or anyone for that matter, down. I'll go outside to find a way through the darkness."
The sounds he heard did not belong to their immediate surrounding. It was a mix of rustling leaves and low ominous rumblings that hinted at many more threats existing beyond the village walls. In her sudden abrupt standing Aiko was back to sharp urgency.
Aiko: "We're really going to have to get some sleep now and prepare for tomorrow's coming events. But remember this, Kenji: every word, every decision you make matters. Our future will be built on what has been chosen right here tonight."
Kenji nodded it, feeling heftily down into his depths by her sermon.
Kenji: "Oh, I understand. I'm far from learning to be done-with this.
As the warriors made their way to their quarters, the fire would fade down, creating a lush embers spark-bright evening. Kenji lay awake replaying events on this night inside a small room. The distant whisperings of dialogue rang through the quiet with memories from earlier-One echo was Aiko's determination, another Ryota's hearty approval, and even Mei's teasing laughter. Each voice was a reminder he wasn't alone.
He murmured words into that solitude of the night.
Kenji: "So much to learn. My body may be weak, but if my mind can guide me at all… I will turn the tide."
His sight fell on the small window where the starlit sky draped Eldoria with trepidation and steadfastness. His internal monologue continued softly, as if engaged in dialogue with his own heart.
Kenji (to himself): "Tomorrow will turn out to be another day—another day given to me for training, for overcoming fears, and for making all those choices that will determine my fate and that of this entire realm. I must be prepared for it."
In another room down the hall, quietly the companions continued their discussion:
Kazuki: "We need to plan. The dark force is nearer than we think. Kenji might just have the insight we need to unlock our strategy."
Nao (with a rebellious edge): "Let's just hope his brain doesn't get us into more trouble than it is worth."
Ren (gruffly): "Every mind counts when the enemy is as cunning as the legends say."
As the night progressed, the patter of hope, fear, and determination into the featureless dialogue carried on with the crackle of burning embers and the soft sighs of the sleeping village. Outside-another roar growling far-off in the depth of Eldoria's hallowed forests would his presence address.
With the first light of dawn just glimmering the horizon, Kenji rose with a whisper full of determination: Kenji: "I'm not finished yet. Not by a long shot."
