chapter 4(a)

a.Mind games and obsession

Chloe stirred in her sleep, her eyes fluttering open to the quiet of an empty room. She glanced to the side, noting Caden's absence; he had woken early, cleaned everything, and slipped away before dawn could break. On the nightstand, a note awaited her, its edges crisp against the dark wood. It read, "*Happy Valentine's Day, Chloe. Since it's also your birthday, I hope you wouldn't mind accompanying me on an underwater train voyage to Jean Luc Island. I've already made a reservation and would really appreciate it if you join me. If you agree, meet me at my place at 8 am; I live straight across your yard.*" She smiled, her heart warming at the thought, though the mystery of how Caden knew her birthday added an intriguing layer to the romance. She wouldn't decline this offer.

She rose from the bed, her movements cautious, and discovered her foot, previously bandaged from last night's coyote encounter, was now healed, the skin smooth and unblemished. The scratch on her thigh had vanished as well. As she made her way to the bathroom, she was struck by how pristine everything was. The floor gleamed, not just clean but polished to a mirror-like shine, as if the very molecules of dirt had been banished. Yet, amidst this perfection, there was a faint, coppery tang in the air, like the scent of blood mixed with the sharp sweetness of roses, an aroma both romantic and unsettling.

She ignored the odd smell, stepping into the shower where the water was warm and cleansing. After her shower, she dressed in an elegant yet sultry outfit: a black silk dress with a deep V-neckline, paired with high-waisted lace-trimmed underwear and strappy heels that accentuated her legs.

Packing her bags, she came across her grandfather's journal in a drawer filled with fantasy novels. She opened it, the old leather whispering secrets, but hunger soon diverted her attention; she had about 10 minutes to eat. Rushing to the kitchen, she found a surprise: a breakfast of poached eggs with caviar on mini brioche toasts, thoughtfully left in the microwave. The romantic gesture of Caden planning ahead filled her with a warm, tingling affection. She ate quickly, the flavors rich and comforting.

With her bags packed, she dragged them across her yard to Caden's front door, the early morning air crisp and scented with the distant hint of roses, like a lover's whisper. She knocked lightly, her heart beating a little faster with anticipation and a touch of the unknown.

Caden's house was a fortress of secrets, its front door a translucent barrier to the outside world, leaving Chloe in suspense as she waited. Inside, Caden stood over a blonde boy, barely out of adolescence, his fangs sunk deep into the youth's neck, drinking just enough to render him inert, his thirst still gnawing at him. The unexpected knock sent a jolt through Caden, who with a blur of speed, concealed the boy downstairs before rushing to compose himself, straightening his bowtie and slipping into his coat.

As he opened the door, he was met by Chloe, her figure wrapped in a dress that whispered elegance and allure. Her gaze, a mix of submission and seduction, met his confidently.

"Chloe, you look breathtaking in that dress," Caden's voice was smooth, gratitude mixed with confidence.

Blushing, Chloe responded, her voice a shy whisper, "You always look so sharp, Caden, especially in that suit."

He leaned in to kiss her cheeks, his lips chillingly cold, a stark contrast to the warmth of the night before. She playfully tugged at his coat, pulling him close for a deep, warming kiss, her lips an attempt to thaw his icy touch. He savored the taste of her, his eyes closing before pulling back. The metallic tang on his lips was noticeable, yet it vanished as she lost herself in the depths of his gaze.

Caden, feeling the urgency of time, grabbed his hat and phone, calling for a taxi. They moved to the porch, sitting on a quaint bamboo swing, its chains creaking softly.

"Hey Caden, what could I do to get into your pants right now?" Chloe's voice carried a playful challenge, her smile mischievous.

Caden drew her in for another kiss, his body responding as his strength, drained by the morning sun, began to replenish. As a vampire, daylight was his bane, reducing him to near-human frailty, his hunger intensified by Chloe's interruption of his feeding. However Chloe was his antidote. Her special blood held the key to his survival, offering healing and perhaps even sun immunity, but it was a gift she had to give willingly. Forced, it would be lethal poison to him.

Their kiss deepened, tongues exploring, Caden's hand daring to venture under her skirt, the lace a whisper against his touch, eliciting a gasp from Chloe, followed by a moan that was both a surrender and a promise. His fingers teased at the edge of her barrier, the moment charged with longing when the taxi's horn, like an unwelcome intruder, broke their spell.

They adjusted their attire, the tension palpable, each movement slow and deliberate, their eyes locked in a silent vow of what was yet to unfold. As they walked down the steps to the gate, the morning was not just the beginning of their journey but a testament to the intertwining of love and danger that defined their existence.

****************

The ride to the train station was filled with laughter and stolen glances, the kind of easy joy that made Chloe feel like she was floating. She rested her head on Caden's shoulder, her fingers idly tracing patterns on his coat. It was crazy, she thought, how quickly she'd fallen for him. Just a day ago, he'd been a stranger—a mysterious, enchanting stranger—and now here she was, unable to keep her hands off him. She sneaked kisses at his cheek, his neck, his forehead, each one sending a thrill through her.

Caden chuckled softly, his arm wrapped around her shoulders, pulling her closer. "You're insatiable," he murmured, his voice low and teasing.

Chloe grinned, her fingers slipping beneath his coat to explore further. She trailed her hand down his chest, her touch light but deliberate, until she reached the waistband of his pants. She glanced up at him, her eyes sparkling with mischief, before sliding her hand inside. His skin was cool to the touch, a stark contrast to the warmth of her own. She felt him tense slightly, but he didn't stop her.

Her fingers brushed against his inner thigh, moving higher until she found what she was looking for. He was soft at first, but under her touch, she felt him grow, his length and girth increasing until he filled her hand. She stroked him slowly, savoring the way he responded to her, the way his breath hitched ever so slightly.

"Chloe," he said, his voice strained but amused. "We're in a taxi."

She pouted, her hand stilling but not pulling away. "So?"

Caden tipped her chin up, his eyes dark with desire but softened by affection. "So," he said, leaning in to kiss her, "we'll have plenty of time for this—and more—in our cabin."

Chloe sighed, her cheeks flushing as she reluctantly withdrew her hand. "Fine," she muttered, though the sparkle in her eyes betrayed her disappointment.

Caden kissed her again, this time deeper, his lips lingering on hers. "Don't be shy with me," he whispered against her mouth. "I'm all yours."

Chloe nodded, her heart swelling with a mix of excitement and nervousness. She was about to respond when the taxi came to a halt, snapping them both back to reality. They had arrived at the train station.

The conductor greeted them with a warm smile, scanning their tickets virtually before leading them to Cabin 12(a). The cabin was spacious and luxurious, with plush seating, a king-sized bed, and all the amenities of a high-end hotel. The only catch was that they'd have to share the dining area with the couple in Cabin 12(b), though the conductor assured them the other couple wouldn't board until the next stop at Suncity Prejuncture.

Chloe glanced around the cabin, her excitement bubbling over. "This is amazing," she said, turning to Caden with a grin. "I can't wait to—"

Her words were cut off as the cabin door burst open, and a man stumbled in, his face flushed and his breathing ragged. "This is my cabin!" he declared, his voice loud and accusatory.

Caden was on his feet in an instant, his body blocking the man's path. "You're mistaken," he said, his tone calm but firm.

The man glared at him, his chest puffing out as he tried to push past. But Caden didn't budge. He stood like a statue, immovable and unyielding, his strength far beyond what the man expected. The intruder's confidence wavered, but he didn't back down.

"Get out of my way!" the man snapped, shoving at Caden with all his might.

Caden's eyes darkened, a flicker of something primal flashing in their depths. His hunger, usually kept in check, stirred dangerously close to the surface. His fingers twitched, the urge to lash out almost overwhelming. But then he felt Chloe's hand on his arm, her touch grounding him.

"Caden," she said softly, her voice a soothing balm. "Talk to him. It's okay."

Caden took a deep breath, his composure returning. He snatched the man's ticket from his hand, his movements swift and precise. "Cabin 21(a)," he said, his voice cold but controlled. "Not 12(a)."

The man's face turned crimson as he realized his mistake. He stammered an apology, bowing slightly before backing out of the cabin and disappearing down the corridor.

Caden shut the door, his eyes lingering on the spot where the man had stood. His hunger still simmered beneath the surface, but Chloe's presence kept it at bay. She wrapped her arms around him, her head resting against his chest.

"You okay?" she asked, her voice soft with concern.

Caden nodded, his hand coming up to cradle the back of her head. "I'm fine," he said, though his eyes betrayed the struggle within. "Just... distracted."

Chloe smiled, her fingers tracing the line of his jaw. "Well, let's get you *un*-distracted," she said, her tone playful but laced with promise.

Caden's lips curved into a smile, his earlier tension melting away. "I like the sound of that."
