The next morning, Elara woke up feeling groggy. Sleep had eluded her, thanks to the system's challenge and Damien's words lingering in her mind. She rubbed her face, trying to shake off the drowsiness, but it was no use. Her thoughts were a tangled mess of questions she wasn't ready to answer.
Dragging herself out of bed, she went through her usual routine and headed to class. The campus was already buzzing with students, and as she walked, she spotted Theo leaning against a tree, casually scrolling through his phone. He looked up at just the right moment, catching her gaze.
"Elara," he greeted with a lazy smile, pushing off the tree. "Finally awake?"
She rolled her eyes. "Barely."
Theo fell into step beside her. "You didn't text back last night. Everything okay?"
She hesitated. "Yeah, just… thinking about stuff."
He raised an eyebrow. "That doesn't sound like a good thing."
Before she could respond, a voice called out from behind them.
"Elara!"
She turned just as Caleb jogged up to them, slightly out of breath. His usual easygoing smile was in place, but there was an unmistakable sharpness in his eyes when he glanced at Theo.
"Did you forget we were supposed to check out the bookstore today?" Caleb asked, shifting his attention to her.
Elara blinked. "Oh. Right."
Theo crossed his arms, watching the interaction with mild interest. "I didn't realize you two had plans."
Caleb shrugged, slipping his hands into his pockets. "Guess it slipped her mind."
Elara felt the tension between them but chose to ignore it. "I can still go. I just need to drop off my stuff first."
"Cool, I'll wait," Caleb said easily.
Theo's smirk deepened as he glanced between them. "Guess I'll leave you to it, then." He turned to Elara, eyes flickering with something unreadable. "Catch you later?"
She nodded slowly, watching as Theo walked away. Once he was gone, Caleb sighed dramatically.
"Does he always hover like that?"
Elara shot him a look. "Theo's my friend."
Caleb smirked. "Right. And I'm a professional violinist."
She shoved his arm playfully. "Shut up and let's go."
At the bookstore, Caleb picked out a few novels while Elara browsed the self-improvement section, feeling oddly drawn to books about decision-making.
Caleb leaned against the shelf beside her. "You're overthinking something."
Elara glanced at him. "Says who?"
He tilted his head. "I know you, Elara. You don't browse this section unless you're trying to figure something out."
She exhaled, resting her chin on her hand. "It's nothing serious."
Caleb studied her for a moment before nodding. "Alright. But if you ever want to talk, you know where to find me."
She smiled. "Thanks, Caleb."
Later that night, Elara sat at her desk, staring at her phone. The system's challenge loomed over her, pressing at the edges of her mind. She needed to sort through her feelings, but every time she tried, she ended up more confused.
She barely had time to process her thoughts before another notification popped up.
"New Event Triggered: Midnight Encounter."
Elara frowned. "Midnight Encounter?"
A knock at her window made her jump. Heart racing, she turned—and there, standing outside, was Damien.
She rushed to open the window. "What are you doing here?" she whispered, careful not to wake Lila.
Damien smirked, his expression unreadable. "Thought you could use some fresh air."
Elara stared at him, her confusion growing. First Theo, then Caleb, and now Damien? What exactly was happening?
One thing was certain—things were only getting more complicated.
