The door hissed as it began to slide open.
Lian's pulse spiked.
"Stop it!" Jiao's voice cracked.
Yu Xian moved first, slamming his body against the door to keep it shut. "Help me!"
Chen and Lin Wei lunged forward, pressing their weight against it.
The metal creaked—something on the other side was pushing back.
A voice—low, distorted—slithered through the gap.
"Let… me… in."
Lian's blood ran cold.
It wasn't just speaking.
It was taunting them.
The stranger gasped, stumbling backward. "It—It's not supposed to do that!"
No one responded. They already knew.
This thing wasn't just a zombie.
It was evolving.
---
Holding the Line
Chen gritted his teeth. "We can't hold this forever."
Yu Xian pressed harder, muscles straining. "Find a way to lock it—now!"
Lin Wei's hands flew over the console. "Give me—just a few more seconds!"
The door shuddered.
The creature on the other side was strong.
Too strong.
Lian's eyes darted to the security monitor. Static. The feed was gone, but for a split second, she swore she saw—
A grin.
The monster was smiling.
Her stomach twisted.
This isn't normal. This isn't just a mutation.
It's aware.
---
The Plan
Lin Wei let out a breathless gasp. "I have the override! But we have to move!"
Chen threw him a sharp look. "Move where?"
The scientist's fingers flew over the keyboard. "There's a secondary exit through the ventilation system. We can reroute power to force the door shut—but we'll be trapped inside."
Jiao paled. "And that's a good idea because…?"
Lin Wei's hands didn't stop moving. "Because once it's locked, we can trigger the failsafe from the inside."
Yu Xian glanced at Lian. Understanding clicked.
"We lure it in," Lian whispered. "Trap it. Blow the lab."
Chen swore. "We're really doing this?"
The door jerked violently.
A hand slipped through the opening—grey, twisted, clawed.
"Tick. Tock," the voice hissed.
Jiao screamed.
Lian didn't hesitate.
"Do it, Lin Wei!"
---
The Chase
Lin Wei slammed his hand on the override.
The door snapped open.
The force sent everyone flying back.
And it stepped inside.
Tall. Wrong. Moving like a predator.
Its head tilted unnaturally. "You run. I chase."
Then it charged.
Yu Xian fired three rapid shots.
One hit its shoulder—it didn't even flinch.
Chen grabbed Lian's wrist. "Go—now!"
They bolted.
Lin Wei led the way, taking a sharp turn down a service corridor.
Behind them—
Thud.
Thud.
Thud.
The monster was following.
And it was fast.
Jiao gasped, struggling to keep up. "We won't—outrun it—!"
Lin Wei shouted, "Almost there!"
They reached a steel hatch in the floor. Lin Wei ripped it open.
Chen pushed Jiao in first.
Then Lin Wei.
Lian hesitated—and turned.
The creature was there.
Just a few feet away.
Watching. Waiting.
It didn't lunge.
It… smirked.
Lian's breath hitched.
It knows.
Chen grabbed her, pulling her down.
The hatch slammed shut.
Darkness swallowed them whole.
---
The Last Stand
Yu Xian's voice was firm. "No time to hesitate. We end this now."
Lin Wei's voice shook. "The failsafe is armed. We just need to—"
BOOM.
The hatch exploded outward.
The creature dropped down into the vent system.
Jiao screamed.
Chen pulled his gun—too slow.
It moved.
Lian felt claws brush past her face.
Then—BANG.
Yu Xian shot it point-blank in the leg.
The creature staggered.
Lian didn't waste the chance.
She grabbed the detonator from Lin Wei's shaking hands.
One button.
One second.
The monster's lips curled. "You—won't—"
Lian pressed the button.
The world erupted into fire.
