CHAPTER 46

I took off my shoes at the entrance, the cool tiles beneath my feet grounding me after the long day. The scent of the house welcomed me—faintly of fresh linen and something spicy from the kitchen, maybe cinnamon or cloves, but the warmth didn’t reach my heart. I padded across the spacious foyer, my footsteps soft against the polished marble floor. A heavy silence hung in the air, so still and thick it made my ears ring. It was awkwardly quiet—too quiet—but I welcomed it. Noise would have only added to the confusion storming inside my head.

My hand brushed the carved mahogany railing as I climbed the grand staircase, every step heavier than the last. Each step felt like it was dragging the weight of all the unanswered questions I carried. When I finally reached the landing, I turned left and headed toward our bedroom. The double doors stood tall and intimidating, yet they offered no resistance as I pushed them open and stepped inside.
