CHAPTER 48

I climbed the stairs slowly, like each step required intention. I returned to our bedroom, the place that had once felt like a cage now starting to resemble something softer. Something almost safe.

I walked to my study table and stared at the mountain of books and notes stacked like tiny skyscrapers. My stomach turned just looking at them. I dropped into the chair with a groan and let my forehead fall onto the desk.

“Why did I sign up for law again?” I muttered.

The books remained silent, as always. Cold. Unforgiving. Filled with thousands of pages of statutes, case law, and legal theory that felt like it wanted to drain the very soul from my body. I opened my laptop and the screen glared back at me, a cruel reminder of how little I’d covered and how much time I didn’t have.
