The diamond ring was custom-made for me by Caelan years ago, the only one of its kind in the world.
The assistant swallowed hard, trying to gloss over it:
"Oh my, I didn't realize Miss Forrester was so mischievous, misplacing such a valuable item."
It was an obviously poor lie, but Caelan breathed a sigh of relief, murmuring:
"I knew it couldn't be her."
Turning away, he held his head in his hands, sounding somewhat dejected:
"Lavender, are you still so angry with me? Didn't you promise you'd never take off the ring for the rest of your life?"
I lowered my eyes and smiled bitterly.
At least I had kept that promise, hadn't I?
As he approached the cabin, he hesitated, taking a deep breath before pushing the door open.
"Lavender, I've come to get you..."
Caelan's pupils constricted sharply.
The interior was completely empty, with only a simple bed and table. There was nowhere for anyone to hide.
