The morning sun barely pierced through the dense clouds looming over the Land of Iron, casting an eerie glow across the frozen landscape. Snowflakes drifted lazily through the air, but the cold that settled over the samurai training grounds had nothing to do with the weather. The duel from the previous night had shaken the warriors to their core, yet it was not the fight that left them in fear—it was the mysterious power Shin Noragetsu had unleashed.
Shin sat on a wooden bench, his fingers curled loosely around the hilt of his katana. His shoulder still ached from the wound he had received, but his thoughts weren't on the pain. The words of the hooded figure replayed in his mind.
The Akatsuki have returned. The Ōtsutsuki watch from the stars. And a war unlike any before is about to begin.
A war. A force beyond anything he had known. The Void.
His hand trembled slightly as he recalled the tendrils of black energy that had burst from his body, sending his opponent flying. It wasn't chakra. It wasn't something he had trained for. It was something... ancient. Something unnatural.
He exhaled sharply, forcing his thoughts back under control. Whatever this power was, he had no time to fear it. If what the hooded man had said was true, then the world was already shifting. And he needed to be ready.
A voice broke through his thoughts. "You look like you saw a ghost."
Shin glanced up to see Yoru, his closest companion within the Land of Iron. The older samurai had a sharp, calculating gaze, but there was an unusual softness in his expression today. He leaned against the railing, watching Shin with curiosity.
"Maybe I did," Shin muttered, setting his blade aside. "Something happened during my duel last night. Something I can't explain."
Yoru frowned. "The elders are whispering about it. They say you wielded a forbidden power. That you're cursed."
Shin let out a bitter chuckle. "Sounds about right."
"You don't sound too worried."
"What's the point? Whatever it is, it's a part of me now." He turned his gaze to the vast snow-covered expanse beyond the training grounds. "But that's not all. Someone came to me last night. He spoke of an impending war. He said the Akatsuki were returning."
Yoru's expression darkened. "That name hasn't been uttered in years. The Akatsuki were wiped out."
"So we thought. But if this man was right... we're standing at the edge of something bigger than we realize."
A heavy silence settled between them. Then, Yoru sighed and rubbed his temple. "If what you're saying is true, we need to inform the Shogun. The Land of Iron may be neutral, but if another war is coming, we won't be able to stay out of it."
Shin nodded. "I was thinking the same thing. But first, I need to understand what's happening to me."
Before Yoru could respond, a commotion erupted from the main gates. The distant sound of hooves against ice echoed through the valley. Shin and Yoru exchanged a glance before rushing toward the entrance.
A lone rider, clad in tattered robes, slumped over his horse as the beast staggered into the courtyard. His body was covered in frost, his breathing ragged. The guards rushed forward, catching him before he collapsed completely.
Shin reached him first, kneeling beside the man. "What happened?"
The rider's lips trembled as he struggled to speak. "They... they're coming... Shadows in the mist... the void... they... took everything..." His eyes widened in horror. "No escape... no light... only darkness..."
And with that, his body went limp.
Shin's stomach twisted. He turned to Yoru, whose face had gone pale. The words were cryptic, but their meaning was clear—something terrible had happened.
A low gust of wind howled through the valley, as if the land itself had sensed the approaching storm. And deep in his bones, Shin knew that this was just the beginning.
He clenched his fists, his resolve hardening. No matter what darkness awaited, he would face it. He would find the truth.
And he would not fall to the Void.
