The mist hung thick in the air, swirling around Shin as he moved cautiously through the abandoned ruins. The stone walls, once proud and towering, were now crumbling, overtaken by time and neglect. The eerie silence pressing against him made his every footstep sound unnaturally loud.
He wasn't alone.
Kaede moved beside him, her sharp gaze scanning their surroundings. Behind them, Renji trailed with his usual quiet but ready stance, his fingers twitching near his kunai pouch. This place—hidden deep within the mountains, far from any village—had long been forgotten. And yet, the Cult had come here.
"This place feels… wrong," Kaede muttered, her voice barely above a whisper.
She wasn't exaggerating. Shin could feel it too, an unnatural stillness that clung to the ruins like a shadow. The closer they got to the heart of the structure, the heavier the air became.
Renji knelt, brushing his fingers against the stone floor. "These markings…" His voice held a note of unease. "They're similar to the ones we saw at the last Cult hideout."
Shin's gaze followed the faint, jagged carvings etched into the walls and ground. He recognized them immediately—symbols of Void Release. But these were different, older. Ancient.
"Whatever they were looking for," Shin said, "they were desperate to find it."
Kaede frowned, glancing toward the ruined archway ahead. "And we might be too late."
The three of them stepped forward, crossing into the inner chamber. The moment they did, the torches lining the walls flared to life, their eerie blue flames casting long shadows across the stone.
Shin's grip tightened around his sword. They weren't alone.
A voice echoed through the chamber, distorted and chilling. "You shouldn't have come here."
From the darkness, figures emerged. Cloaked in tattered robes, their faces obscured, the members of the Void Cult moved with unsettling precision. There were five of them, their presence filling the chamber with an oppressive force.
One stepped forward, his voice hollow yet laced with amusement. "The Phantom Swordsman. How fortunate that you came to us willingly."
Shin said nothing. He had no patience for their theatrics.
The Cultist chuckled. "We are not your enemies, Noragetsu. Not yet. But soon, you will understand."
Renji scoffed, drawing a kunai. "Enough talk. If you know who we are, then you know why we're here."
The Cultist tilted his head. "Ah, but do you?"
Without warning, the ground beneath them trembled. The air grew thick with energy, an unseen force pressing down on them. From the center of the chamber, the ancient markings on the floor began to glow, pulsing with a sickly violet light.
Shin cursed under his breath. A ritual.
"Move!" he shouted.
Kaede and Renji sprang into action, darting to the sides as the Cultists raised their hands, unleashing a wave of darkness. Tendrils of void energy lashed out, cracking the stone where they struck.
Shin surged forward, his blade flashing as he cut through the nearest attacker. The Cultist barely reacted as the blade met flesh—no blood, no pain, just an eerie silence as his form dissolved into shadows.
Illusions.
They weren't fighting humans.
Kaede weaved through the attack, her hands flashing through seals before she exhaled a torrent of fire. The flames roared to life, consuming the spectral figures, but the Cultists didn't falter. The fire burned them away, yet more formed in their place.
"We're not getting anywhere like this!" Renji called out.
Shin clenched his jaw. The ritual—if they didn't stop it, something worse was coming.
His gaze darted to the center of the chamber. The markings had grown brighter, their glow intensifying with each passing second. He could feel it now—a presence, something ancient and hungry, awakening beneath their feet.
Then he heard it.
A whisper.
It slithered through the air, bypassing the battle, sinking deep into his mind. It wasn't a voice he recognized, but it carried weight, an undeniable authority that chilled him to his core.
Come forth. Embrace the Abyss.
Shin's vision blurred. For a moment, the battlefield faded, replaced by a vast, endless darkness. He was standing at the edge of something incomprehensible, something beyond the reach of mortals. And in that abyss, something stirred.
Then Kaede's voice snapped him back.
"Shin!"
He gasped, his grip tightening around his sword. The Cultists were closing in, their shadows stretching unnaturally. Kaede was beside him, eyes filled with concern, but she didn't hesitate.
"We have to stop that ritual now!" she said.
Shin nodded, pushing aside the lingering unease. "Renji, take out the symbols on the walls. Kaede, with me—we're shutting this down."
Renji wasted no time, vanishing into the shadows as his kunai shot out, striking the glowing inscriptions along the chamber walls. Sparks erupted where metal met stone, disrupting the flow of energy.
Kaede leaped forward, flames dancing in her palms as she sent a wave of fire toward the ritual's center. The moment the flames touched the pulsing sigil, a shockwave of energy exploded outward.
The Cultists screamed.
The ritual was collapsing.
Shin didn't wait. He stepped into the center, feeling the pull of the abyss claw at him. But he ignored it, focused only on one thing—ending this.
With a single, decisive slash, his sword cut through the heart of the ritual.
The chamber erupted in a blinding flash.
When the light faded, the Cultists were gone. The markings had vanished. The oppressive presence in the air had lifted.
Shin exhaled, his body tense.
Kaede looked around, her brows furrowed. "It's over…?"
Renji appeared beside them, his expression grim. "No. That wasn't all of them. They left before we could finish them off."
Shin clenched his fists. He knew Renji was right. The Cult wasn't done. This was just another step in whatever they were planning.
And next time, they wouldn't be so lucky.
