The chill of the underground shrine lingered on Shin's skin as they retraced their steps through the dim passageway. His heartbeat had yet to slow, the echoes of what he had seen still thrumming in his veins. That vision—no, that presence—had not been a mere illusion. It had been real.
Kaede walked beside him, arms crossed, throwing wary glances in his direction. Renji remained silent, but the tension in his posture was evident. None of them spoke of what had just happened. The weight of the unknown pressed down on them like the stone walls surrounding them.
They emerged from the tunnel into the ruined chamber, the remnants of the battle still visible. The bodies of fallen cultists lay scattered, their cloaks soaked in blood and dirt. The air smelled of decay, but something else had tainted it—a strange, acrid scent, like burnt energy.
Renji stopped, eyes narrowing. "This wasn't here before."
Shin followed his gaze to the center of the chamber. The ground had been scorched, the stone cracked and blackened. Faint tendrils of smoke still curled from the marks, but what unsettled him the most was the shape of the destruction.
A perfect circle.
Kaede exhaled sharply. "That's… a summoning seal, isn't it?"
Renji nodded. "Or something worse."
Shin stepped closer, his pulse quickening. The sigils carved into the stone pulsed faintly, remnants of the energy still clinging to them. He could feel it—an unnatural pull, as though the void itself had grazed this place.
His fingers twitched at his side. The moment he had touched that carving in the shrine, something had changed. His connection to the Void Release had deepened, but at what cost?
Kaede's voice cut through the silence. "We need to destroy it. Now."
Renji shook his head. "It's already been used. Destroying it won't change anything. Whatever they summoned… it's out."
A heavy silence followed. Shin clenched his fists.
The cultists had succeeded. They had awakened something.
A low growl rumbled from the shadows.
All three of them turned in unison.
From the far end of the chamber, where the passage led deeper into the ruins, something stirred. The air grew colder, the very shadows seeming to tremble. Then, out of the darkness, a figure emerged.
It was unlike anything Shin had seen before.
Tall and gaunt, its form wavered, as if struggling to remain solid. Its flesh was dark, shifting like liquid, but its eyes—its eyes burned with a violet glow that sent a jolt of recognition through Shin's spine.
The same glow that had flickered in his own eyes.
Kaede's breath hitched. "What the hell is that?"
The creature took a slow step forward, its presence suffocating. The moment it moved, Shin felt it—an overwhelming pressure, a force that wasn't entirely of this world.
Then it spoke.
"The Abyss stirs."
The voice wasn't human. It wasn't even truly a voice. It resonated inside their minds, reverberating through their bones.
Shin took a step forward, hand on his sword. "Who… no, what are you?"
The creature tilted its head, its body rippling like a mirage. "We are the remnants of what was lost. The heralds of what is to come."
Renji exhaled sharply. "That doesn't sound good."
Kaede tightened her grip on her kunai. "I'm not waiting for it to finish its cryptic speech."
She lunged, her movements swift and precise. The kunai flew from her fingers, striking true—only to pass through the creature as if it were smoke.
Shin's breath caught.
Not smoke.
Void.
The creature turned its burning gaze on Kaede. She staggered, clutching her head as if struck by an unseen force.
Shin moved without thinking. In an instant, he was between them, sword drawn. The moment his blade met the air near the creature, something happened.
A shockwave erupted from the impact, sending ripples through the very fabric of space. The creature recoiled, its form flickering. For the first time, its ethereal composure wavered.
Renji's eyes widened. "Shin, your sword—"
Shin didn't hesitate. He pressed forward, his blade cutting through the air in precise arcs. The creature twisted, dodging with unnatural fluidity, but every time his sword neared it, that same reaction occurred—a disruption, a ripple, as if his weapon alone could sever the connection binding it to this plane.
The realization struck him.
Void against void.
His power wasn't just connected to the abyss—it could oppose it.
The creature let out a guttural sound, somewhere between a growl and a shriek. Its body pulsed violently, as if struggling to maintain its form. Then, without warning, it turned—fading into the shadows, retreating into the depths of the ruins.
Kaede gasped, regaining her composure. "It's… gone?"
Shin's grip on his sword tightened. "No."
It hadn't been defeated. It had withdrawn.
And that meant only one thing.
It wasn't alone.
Renji exhaled. "We need to get out of here."
Shin nodded. "Agreed."
The three of them moved swiftly, exiting the ruins, the weight of what had just transpired pressing on them.
But even as they stepped into the open air, Shin could feel it.
The Abyss had stirred.
And it wasn't done yet.
