The wind howled across the ruined valley, carrying with it the scent of charred earth and the lingering presence of battle. Shin Noragetsu stood atop a jagged outcrop, his breathing heavy, his katana slick with blood both his own and that of his enemies. The sky above was fractured—shattered like a broken mirror, cracks of purple energy streaking across the heavens as the very fabric of reality struggled to hold itself together.
He had felt the shift the moment it happened. It wasn't just the battlefield that had changed; something far greater had begun to unravel. The presence of the Void was no longer distant—it was here, seeping through the cracks in the sky, bleeding into the world like an unstoppable tide.
The enemy forces had withdrawn for now, but Shin knew this was only a temporary reprieve. He turned to his allies, their faces illuminated by the flickering flames of the battlefield. Rei, her robes torn and stained, clutched a deep gash in her shoulder but remained upright, her expression hardened with determination. Beside her, Jiro knelt, panting, his hands gripping the hilt of his massive sword as he tried to steady himself.
"They're regrouping," Rei murmured, wincing as she adjusted her stance. "But that's not what concerns me." She lifted her gaze to the sky, her lips pressing into a tight line. "That… whatever that is… it's getting worse."
Shin followed her gaze. The cracks in the sky pulsed, widening ever so slightly, as if the barrier between worlds was failing. Beyond them, shadows writhed—shapes that had no true form, no substance, but carried a presence so suffocating that even from this distance, Shin could feel them pressing down on his soul.
"The Void," he muttered under his breath. "It's leaking through faster than before."
Jiro wiped the sweat from his brow, shaking his head. "And let me guess, if those things fully cross over, we're done for?"
Shin didn't answer immediately. He didn't have to. The truth was obvious. If the barrier collapsed, it wouldn't just be this battlefield that was lost—it would be the world itself.
Rei exhaled sharply, her frustration barely contained. "Then we need to move. If Tenka is behind this, we end it now."
Shin nodded. "Agreed."
The three of them gathered what little strength they had left and descended into the valley, moving through the wreckage of war. The land was scorched and broken, the once-vibrant fields reduced to a barren wasteland of smoldering ruins and crumbled stone. The remnants of the enemy's forces had fallen back beyond the hills, regrouping near the entrance of an ancient temple—their final stronghold.
As they approached, Shin felt it. A pulse. Faint at first, but unmistakable.
A presence.
It was waiting for them.
The temple loomed ahead, its massive stone gates partially collapsed, revealing a winding stairway that led deep into the earth. Dark energy radiated from within, thick and suffocating. The closer they got, the heavier it became, as if the air itself was resisting their approach.
Shin placed a hand on the hilt of his katana, his grip tightening. "Stay sharp."
Rei scoffed. "No need to remind me."
They stepped inside.
The descent was slow, the flickering torches along the walls barely illuminating the path forward. The deeper they went, the colder it became, until their breaths came out in thin wisps of frost. Then, the air shifted.
A voice, smooth and calm, echoed through the chamber.
"You've come at last."
The shadows ahead twisted, and from them, a figure emerged.
Tenka.
His robes billowed in an unseen wind, his piercing eyes gleaming like twin stars in the darkness. His presence alone was enough to send a chill down Shin's spine—not out of fear, but because he knew. This was the moment.
The battle that would decide everything.
Tenka stepped forward, his hands raised in a gesture almost too casual for the weight of what was about to unfold. "You've fought well to make it here," he said, his tone laced with something akin to amusement. "But you must know by now… you cannot stop what has already begun."
Shin said nothing. Words were pointless now.
He unsheathed his blade.
Tenka smiled. "Good."
Then, he raised his hand.
The ground trembled. The air warped. The very walls of the temple seemed to shift as a pulse of Void energy erupted from Tenka's palm, crashing into the world with the force of a dying star. The ceiling above cracked, pieces of stone raining down as the temple itself threatened to collapse.
Shin moved first. He surged forward, katana flashing as he aimed for Tenka's throat.
The Void Cult leader sidestepped with ease, his movements impossibly fluid, as if he were untethered from reality itself. With a flick of his wrist, he countered, his blade—a weapon forged from the very essence of the Void—clashing against Shin's own. The force of the impact sent a shockwave rippling through the chamber, the sheer pressure threatening to crush everything around them.
Rei and Jiro sprang into action.
Rei weaved through the chaos, hurling kunai infused with explosive chakra. They detonated mid-air, but Tenka moved through the blasts like a phantom, untouched and unbothered. Jiro roared, bringing his massive sword down in a crushing arc, aiming to cleave the cult leader in two.
But Tenka was faster.
He twisted his body at an impossible angle, slipping past the blade before delivering a brutal counterstrike—his palm striking Jiro's chest with enough force to send him hurtling across the chamber. Jiro crashed against the stone wall, the impact cracking the surface.
Rei barely had time to react before Tenka turned his attention to her. He flicked his fingers, and a tendril of darkness shot forward, wrapping around her wrist. She gritted her teeth, struggling against the pull, but the Void's grip was relentless, draining her strength with each passing second.
Shin's eyes burned with fury.
He had seen enough.
The Void within him roared to life.
The air around him shimmered, his katana igniting with a spectral glow. He dashed forward, his speed surpassing anything he had ever achieved before. His blade moved like a streak of light, cleaving through the tendrils of darkness binding Rei and forcing Tenka to finally step back.
Their eyes met.
Tenka's smirk faltered—just slightly.
"You still resist?" he murmured.
Shin exhaled, his voice steady. "I will resist until my last breath."
For the first time, Tenka's expression shifted. Amusement faded, replaced by something else.
Acknowledgment.
The battle was far from over. But as the sky above them fractured further, Shin knew one thing for certain.
This was only the beginning of the end.
