The door exploded inward, sending shards of metal and concrete flying through the air.
Akira's cybernetic reflexes kicked in. He moved before the dust settled.
Ramirez dove behind the counter. Kael swore, flipping his tablet shut.
And then, through the smoke, a silhouette emerged.
Tall. Clad in matte-black combat armor. A long, high-tech rifle resting against their shoulder.
The figure stepped into the dimly lit room, their visor flickering with a red targeting HUD.
Kael exhaled sharply. "Damn. They sent her?"
Akira's eyes narrowed. "Who?"
The bounty hunter tilted her head slightly, as if amused. Then she spoke—her voice distorted by a voice modulator.
"Akira Kurogane. You're worth twenty million credits. Let's make this easy."
She raised her rifle.
Akira dodged.
A plasma round tore through the wall where he had just stood, leaving a sizzling hole.
She was fast.
But Akira was faster.
He activated his combat cloak, vanishing into a blur of motion.
The bounty hunter barely hesitated. Her visor recalibrated instantly.
A second shot fired.
Akira twisted mid-air, feeling the heat of the plasma round graze past his shoulder. Too close.
He landed, flipping a table for cover. "Name?" he called out, scanning the room for weak points.
The bounty hunter chuckled. "Specter."
Kael cursed. "Oh, you're so screwed."
Specter moved like a phantom. Her boots barely made a sound against the metal floor as she closed the distance.
Akira countered immediately. His gauntlet crackled with kinetic energy as he lunged—a brutal right hook aimed at her helmet.
CLANG!
Specter blocked with her armored forearm, twisting his wrist into a painful lock.
Akira gritted his teeth. She was strong. Too strong.
Before she could twist his arm further, he activated his electro-shock pulse.
BZZT!
A surge of electricity rippled through her suit, forcing her to release him.
Specter staggered for half a second—long enough.
Akira retaliated with a spinning kick, sending her crashing through a rack of illegal tech.
Ramirez popped up from cover. "We should RUN!"
Akira ignored her. His cybernetic HUD analyzed Specter's armor—titanium weave, plasma-resistant plating, adaptive reflex enhancers.
She wasn't just some bounty hunter.
She was elite.
And she wasn't done.
Specter vaulted off the wreckage, flipping mid-air. Her visor locked onto Akira's chest.
Her gauntlet lit up—a miniature railgun mounted on her wrist.
BOOM.
The energy round exploded against Akira's shoulder, sending him skidding backward.
Pain flared. His cybernetic systems struggled to compensate. Armor integrity at 74%.
Specter landed gracefully, reloading. "You're good, Kurogane. But not good enough."
Akira wiped blood from his mouth. "I get that a lot."
Kael slammed a fist against a hidden console. "I'm not dying today!"
The floor beneath them rumbled.
Ramirez's eyes widened. "Kael, what did you just—"
The entire building tilted.
Kael grinned. "Failsafe protocol. This place is built on a sinking platform. In thirty seconds, this entire sector drops into the Underbelly."
Specter's head snapped toward him. "You wouldn't."
Kael shrugged. "Try me."
Akira's eyes flickered to the exit hatch behind the counter.
He had one chance.
