The streets of the Underbelly were nothing like Neo-Tokyo above.
There were no sleek skyscrapers, no polished holo-billboards, no laws.
Just twisted metal, dim neon, and the stench of burning circuits.
Akira, Ramirez, and Kael moved cautiously through the wreckage of an old industrial district, stepping over rusted cables and shattered glass.
Above them, makeshift bridges connected the crumbling buildings, where scavengers lurked with cybernetic eyes, tracking their every move.
Ramirez muttered under her breath, "Feels like we're walking into a trap."
Kael smirked. "That's because we are. Just stay close."
They turned a corner, and suddenly—lights.
A sprawling marketplace unfolded before them, built into the remains of an abandoned metro station.
Holographic banners flickered, displaying cryptic advertisements in multiple languages. Vendors lined the streets, selling everything from black-market cyberware to illegal AI chips.
Akira's HUD scanned the area.
> Warning: High criminal activity detected. Proceed with caution.
A merchant with augmented arms was showcasing a crate of cybernetic implants, advertising "stolen from the latest MegaCorp models."
Further down, a hooded figure whispered to a desperate buyer, handing over a vial of neural boosters—highly addictive, borderline illegal.
This wasn't a market.
It was a war zone disguised as commerce.
Kael led them to a hidden shop, tucked between two collapsed buildings. The door slid open automatically, revealing a dimly lit interior lined with tech salvaged from every corner of the city.
A voice greeted them.
"Well, well. If it isn't Kael the Rat."
A woman stepped forward, arms crossed. Her left eye glowed red, cybernetic and enhanced.
Akira's systems identified her instantly.
> Name: Veyra "The Smuggler"
Affiliation: Independent Broker
Known for: Weaponized black-market augmentations
Kael grinned. "Miss me?"
Veyra ignored him, her gaze shifting to Akira and Ramirez. "New friends? Or new debts?"
Akira stepped forward. "We need safe passage out of here."
Veyra chuckled. "Nothing's free, Techno-Mancer. What do you have to trade?"
Akira considered his options. He had no money, and whatever cyberware he had was already hardwired into his system.
Ramirez stepped in. "We're not here to bargain. We just fought off a cyber-ghoul horde. Either you help us, or you can deal with the next wave yourself."
Veyra raised an eyebrow. "Cyber-ghouls? In the upper districts?"
Kael smirked. "Not just ghouls. Something bigger is happening, Veyra. If you're smart, you'll want in."
Veyra studied them for a moment. Then, she smiled.
"Alright. I'll get you out of the Underbelly. But in return, you owe me a favor. And trust me—you won't like it."
