Chapter 14: Saving Amy

Chapter 14: Saving Amy

1

Amy was slipping.

She leaned heavier against me with every step, her breathing shallow, her skin cold as death. The dead corn stretched endlessly in every direction, offering no way out.

But I didn't care.

I wasn't going to lose her.

Her fingers twitched in mine. "Jack… I don't think I can—"

"You can," I cut in, tightening my grip. "Just hold on."

But deep down, I knew I was losing her.

And the Watcher knew it, too.

2

The whispers came back.

Soft at first, curling around the edges of my hearing like a sickness creeping in.

Amy stiffened, her grip loosening.

Her lips parted.

The whispers were *coming from her*.

My stomach twisted.

"No," I whispered.

The dead corn rustled, though there was no wind. The ground felt *softer*, like something beneath it was **breathing**.

And then Amy's fingers slipped from mine.

3

She **collapsed**.

Her body hit the ground with a sickening stillness, her chest barely rising.

Panic crashed through me. "Amy!"

I dropped to my knees, shaking her. "Stay with me. Do you hear me? *Stay with me!*"

Her eyelids fluttered.

But then—

A shadow curled around her fingers.

Dark. Thin. **Wrong**.

I yanked her away, but it was too late.

The ground **split open**.

And Amy **screamed**.

4

Something *pulled her down*.

Her body was **dragging** into the dirt, as if unseen hands were pulling her into the earth itself. Her nails clawed at the ground, her face twisted in terror.

"Jack!"

I lunged, grabbing her wrists, pulling **hard**.

She was being torn between me and **it**.

The Watcher.

It wasn't trying to possess her anymore.

It was trying to take her **back**.

I clenched my teeth, pulling harder. "No! You're not taking her!"

The shadows **tightened** around her legs, pulling harder.

Amy sobbed, her grip slipping. "Jack… please…"

I wasn't strong enough.

I was going to lose her.

Unless—

I did something **stupid**.

5

I let go.

Just for a second.

Then—I reached **for the shadows instead**.

And I grabbed **them**.

The moment my fingers touched them, a **shock** ran through my body. My vision **blurred**, the world turning inside out.

I wasn't just holding Amy anymore.

I was **holding the Watcher**.

It *felt me*.

And it **screamed**.

6

Pain tore through me, but I didn't let go.

I **pulled**.

The shadows writhed, twisting, *fighting*.

But I wouldn't let them win.

Amy gasped, her eyes snapping open. Her hands **latched onto mine**—the real Amy.

For the first time, she *fought back*.

The Watcher **shrieked**.

The shadows **snapped**.

And then—

Amy was **free**.

7

She **gasped**, her body collapsing into mine.

The shadows **died**, curling back into the ground, disappearing **forever**.

The air **shifted**.

The dead corn **faded**.

And when I looked up—

The **real world** was there.

We were home.

Amy clung to me, shaking.

And for the first time in forever—

She was **herself** again.
