Celestine barely had time to react before the Keeper launched her attack. A burst of arcane energy surged through the air, illuminating the Silent Archives with a blinding flash. Celestine and Elyndor leaped aside as the spell shattered a nearby bookshelf, sending ancient tomes cascading to the ground in a cloud of dust and glowing embers.
Elyndor's golden eyes narrowed as he raised a hand, summoning a protective barrier around them. "We don't have time for this," he muttered. "The longer we delay, the more likely reinforcements will arrive."
Celestine's grip tightened around the tome in her hands. The Keeper was powerful, but she couldn't let her fear hold her back. She took a step forward, steadying her breath. "We're not here to destroy," she called out. "We're here for the truth."
The Keeper's violet eyes flickered with something unreadable before she raised her staff once more. "Truth is a dangerous thing, Librarian. And some truths are meant to be forgotten."
With that, the battle resumed.
Elyndor countered the Keeper's next attack with a pulse of energy that sent ripples through the air, distorting the very fabric of reality. The Silent Archives groaned in protest as the old magic sealed within its walls reacted to the clash of celestial forces. Celestine felt the weight of history pressing down on them, as if the Archive itself were watching, waiting.
Then, amidst the chaos, the shadowy figure that had followed them finally moved.
A low hum filled the air as the entity stretched out a hand, and the very structure of the Silent Archives trembled. The Keeper faltered, glancing at the being with something akin to recognition—and fear.
"You…" she whispered, her stance shifting from aggression to uncertainty.
Celestine and Elyndor exchanged a glance. Whoever—or whatever—this entity was, it held power even the Keepers feared.
The figure spoke at last, its voice echoing through the chamber like a distant memory. "The Heart of the Archives has been waiting."
The floor beneath them shuddered, and before anyone could react, a deep chasm split the ground open. A staircase of shifting, glowing runes spiraled downward into the abyss, revealing a hidden path leading to the core of the Silent Archives.
The Keeper took a hesitant step back, her expression unreadable. "You cannot change what has already been rewritten," she warned. "If you seek the Heart, then you will learn why it was sealed away."
Celestine turned to Elyndor, her resolve strengthening. "Then we have no choice but to see it for ourselves."
Together, they descended into the unknown, the silent whispers of the past guiding their way toward a truth long buried by the gods themselves.
