Chapter 17: Into the Labyrinth

The echoes of their footsteps reverberated through the endless corridors of the Archive as Celestine, Elyndor, and the entity sprinted deeper into the labyrinthine structure. The golden light from the crystalline tome still pulsed within Celestine's chest, but it was no longer a comfort—it was a beacon, drawing the Keepers closer with every second.

"We can't outrun them forever," Elyndor panted, glancing back as shadows flickered at the edges of the passageways. "They're celestial warriors. They don't tire like we do."

Celestine didn't reply. She knew he was right. The Keepers had been created for one purpose: to protect the rewritten order of the world. They would hunt her to the ends of time if necessary.

The entity slowed, placing a translucent hand against the wall. "There's another way."

The runes embedded in the stone shifted beneath its touch, rearranging themselves into an ancient script Celestine had never seen before. A gust of wind surged from the depths of the corridor, carrying whispers of lost voices. The wall trembled, then split apart, revealing a passage shrouded in mist.

Elyndor stepped back. "That wasn't there before."

"It wasn't meant to be found," the entity said. "This is the Veiled Path, a hidden route within the Archive that even the gods cannot see. It will take us to the Chamber of Forgotten Names."

Celestine hesitated. "And what do we find there?"

The entity's gaze met hers, solemn and knowing. "The true history of the first Librarian. The one who came before you."

A chill ran through her. She had always believed she was the first and only Librarian of Eldoria, but if what the entity said was true, then her very existence was another fabrication of the gods.

The distant clatter of armored footsteps broke through her thoughts. The Keepers were closing in.

Celestine took a deep breath, then stepped into the mist. "Then we have no choice. Let's go."

Elyndor followed, daggers still in hand, while the entity lingered for a moment before vanishing into the passage. As soon as they entered, the wall behind them resealed itself, erasing their escape route. The whispers in the air grew louder, carrying fragments of forgotten names, lost memories, and truths the gods had buried for millennia.

Celestine clenched her fists. If the gods had gone to such lengths to erase the past, then it was a past worth uncovering.

And she would uncover every last secret they had tried to hide.
