Chapter 53: Confrontation

Chris barely had time to sit down in the lecture hall before he heard hurried footsteps approaching.

He didn't need to look up to know who it was.

Skylar.

She stopped in front of his desk, her breathing slightly uneven, her eyes scanning him like she was searching for answers she wasn't sure she wanted to find.

Chris slowly lifted his gaze to meet hers. Calm. Unreadable.

"Something wrong?" His voice was smooth, casual—like he didn't already know why she was here.

Skylar's fingers curled into fists at her sides. "My dad. He—" She hesitated, lowering her voice. "He said you came to our house last night."

Chris tilted his head slightly. "I did."

Skylar's heart pounded. "Why?"

Chris leaned back in his chair, studying her reaction. "I spoke to him about you."

Her breath hitched. "What does that mean?"

Chris didn't answer immediately. Instead, he motioned to the empty seat beside him. "Sit."

She hesitated. Then, reluctantly, she did.

Skylar turned to face him, eyes filled with confusion. And worry.

"Chris… what did you do?" Her voice was softer this time, almost pleading.

Chris watched her for a moment before speaking. "Your father was arranging another engagement. I made sure that wouldn't happen."

Skylar froze.

"What?" she whispered.

Chris's expression remained unreadable. "I told him I wanted your hand instead."

Skylar stared at him, her mind struggling to process his words. "But—why? How?" Her brows furrowed. "You—You don't have that kind of money. You're just a—"

She stopped herself.

Chris smirked slightly. "Just a what?"

Skylar felt her stomach twist. "Chris, my father is—he only listens to people with power. Money. He wouldn't just—"

She stopped again, realization dawning in her eyes.

Chris held her gaze, letting the silence speak for itself.

"No," she whispered. "That's not possible. How—" She shook her head. "Where would you even—"

Chris leaned in slightly, his voice calm but firm. "I told you before, Skylar. You don't know me."

Skylar felt her entire world shift.

Because deep down…

She was beginning to realize—he was right.
