Chris stared at the screen for a moment before typing. But this time, his words didn't hold their usual sharpness.
CHRIS: I owe you an apology. For everything.
There was no immediate reply. He wasn't sure if she was stunned or simply choosing her response carefully. Either way, she wasn't the type to let words sway her so easily.
Ethan, watching from across the room, raised an eyebrow. "You? Apologizing? Now that's a first."
Chris exhaled, setting his phone down. "I don't expect forgiveness. I just need her to know."
Ethan shook his head with a smirk. "You're the most powerful man in the world, and yet, she still gets under your skin."
Chris didn't deny it.
A NEW MESSAGE APPEARED.
SKYLAR: Apologizing after everything? What exactly are you sorry for?
Chris hesitated for the first time in a long time. But he knew the answer.
CHRIS: For lying. For pushing you away. For making choices that left you with none.
Minutes passed. Then, finally…
SKYLAR: And do you regret them?
Chris closed his eyes briefly. He could lie—say yes, say he wished things had been different. But he knew she'd see right through it.
So instead, he told the truth.
CHRIS: No. I regret the pain, but not the choices. Because every choice brought me here. And I don't regret standing where I am.
Another long silence. Then—
SKYLAR: At least you're honest. That's a start.
Chris exhaled, feeling something unspoken settle between them. It wasn't forgiveness. Not yet. But maybe, just maybe, it was a step toward s
omething neither of them could define.
