(Skylar's POV)
Chris's unannounced arrival in Nigeria had shaken the entire government. Security forces scrambled. Officials whispered in panic. And now, inside the grand conference hall, we faced the man at the top—President Okonkwo.
Seated at the head of the table, the Nigerian leader watched Chris carefully. His fingers tapped against the polished wood, a slow, deliberate rhythm. Around him, his ministers sat stiffly, their faces masks of controlled irritation.
I took my seat beside Chris, feeling the weight of the moment.
President Okonkwo finally spoke. "Mr. President, Nigeria is a sovereign nation. Your presence here, unannounced and unrequested, is… bold."
Chris didn't flinch. "Boldness is necessary when my people are threatened."
A murmur ran through the room.
Okonkwo leaned forward. "Minister Skylar was not harmed. A minor altercation does not warrant this level of escalation."
Chris's expression darkened. "It wasn't an altercation. It was a warning. And I don't tolerate warnings."
The air in the room thickened.
One of the ministers, an older man with graying hair, scoffed. "With all due respect, President Chris, you are overreacting."
Chris exhaled slowly, tapping his fingers against the table. "Let me explain something, Mr. Minister." His voice was calm, but there was an undercurrent of danger beneath it. "Skylar isn't just another minister. She represents my administration. If she isn't safe, then the message is clear—Nigeria cannot guarantee the safety of a U.S. official."
He leaned back slightly. "And if that's the case, then I have to reconsider our relationship."
Silence.
President Okonkwo's jaw tightened. "Are you threatening us?"
Chris tilted his head. "I'm giving you a choice."
The room tensed.
Chris continued. "Either you ensure Skylar's safety and allow her to do her work, or we pull back our financial and military support. No aid. No intelligence-sharing. No strategic alliances."
The ministers exchanged glances. This was the nuclear option.
President Okonkwo studied Chris for a long moment before exhaling. "You're making a mistake."
Chris didn't blink. "No. The mistake was thinking you could intimidate someone under my protection."
Okonkwo's gaze flickered to me. "Minister Skylar, do you support this approach?"
I felt every eye in the room turn to me.
I took a breath and met Okonkwo's gaze. "I support getting the job done."
A long pause.
Then, finally, Okonkwo nodded. "Fine. You will have full security. And no further… incidents."
Chris's lips curled into a small smile. "Good choice."

Later That Night – My Apartment
Chris stood by the window, looking out over the Abuja skyline. I tossed my blazer onto the couch, exhaustion weighing me down.
"You didn't have to do that," I said softly.
He turned, his expression unreadable. "Yes, I did."
I sighed, rubbing my temples. "You made enemies today. Nigeria won't forget this power move."
Chris stepped toward me, his presence overwhelming. "I don't care about Nigeria, Skylar. I care about you."
My heart skipped a beat.
I should have been angry. I should have told him he was reckless.
But I couldn't.
Because no one had ever fought for me like this before.
I stepped forward and wrapped my arms around him.
He tensed for a second before slowly wrapping his arms around me too.
I exhaled. "Just… don't make a habit of showing up unannounced in foreign countries, okay?"
Chris smirked. "No promises."
And despite everything… I smiled.
