Chapter 188: Betrayal in Broad Daylight

(Skylar's POV)

I barely made it to my office in the White House before the news hit.

The moment my phone buzzed with a dozen alerts, a deep sense of dread settled in my chest. I grabbed the remote and turned on the TV.

The Presidential Seal flashed across the screen.

Chris was at the podium.

Standing tall, dressed in his signature dark suit, he faced the world's cameras with the composure of a man who had already made his decision. Ethan stood beside him, along with several senior military officials.

My blood ran cold.

"My fellow Americans," Chris's voice was steady, firm—unshaken. "Moments ago, I authorized the full withdrawal of all U.S. diplomats, military advisors, and business operations from Nigeria. Effective immediately, all American-owned assets in the region are frozen."

I gripped the armrest of my chair, my breath caught in my throat.

"Additionally," Chris continued, "following the hostile actions taken against the United States—actions that include an assassination attempt on a high-ranking U.S. minister—we can no longer stand idle. We have exhausted all diplomatic channels, and in response to Nigeria's refusal to cooperate, I am left with no choice but to take decisive action."

He looked directly into the camera.

"As of this moment, the United States is officially at war with Nigeria."

The world froze.

My body went rigid. No. No, no, no.

Chris stepped back from the podium as reporters exploded into chaos. Questions were shouted, voices overlapping, but he had already said everything that mattered.

War.

He had declared war.

I barely registered the sound of my office door slamming open. "Madam Minister!" Agent Harris rushed in, his face pale. "We need to get you to the Situation Room now."

I forced myself to move, my mind racing. He betrayed me.

I had asked for one week.

Chris didn't even wait a day.

As I hurried down the hall, escorted by my security team, my hands clenched into fists.

This wasn't just war. This was personal.

And if Chris thought I was going to just stand by and watch—

He was dead wrong.
