Chapter 206: Into the Lion’s Den

(Ethan's POV)

The convoy sped down the darkened highway toward Murtala Muhammed International Airport, the roads cleared by our forces ahead of time. Armored SUVs flanked us, their tinted windows reflecting the distant fires still burning in Lagos. The city was a war zone, but for Chris, it was already history.

I sat beside him in the back of the lead vehicle, the low hum of the engine the only sound between us. His gaze was fixed on his phone, scanning reports, updates, and intel on Moscow.

"You know Volkov won't take this lightly," I said, breaking the silence.

Chris didn't look up. "Good."

I exhaled. He was expecting resistance. No, he was inviting it.

Our plane was waiting when we arrived. A modified Gulfstream G700, its matte black exterior blending into the night. The moment we stepped out of the SUV, Calloway and his security team surrounded us, scanning the area for any last-minute threats.

"We're clear," Calloway confirmed.

Chris ascended the jet stairs without hesitation. I followed, my mind still racing.

As soon as we were airborne, I turned to him. "What's the real plan here?"

Chris leaned back in his seat, steepling his fingers. "Nigeria was a test."

"A test?"

He gave me a knowing look. "I needed to see how far the world would let me go. How much control I could seize before they reacted."

I frowned. "And what did you learn?"

Chris smirked. "They're afraid, Ethan. The U.N., the West, even Russia and China. They bark, but they don't bite. Not unless I force their hand."

His confidence was absolute. And that was what made him dangerous.

"And Russia?" I pressed.

Chris's expression darkened slightly. "Volkov thinks I owe him. He wants a say in what happens next."

"And you're going to give him one?"

Chris chuckled. "I'll let him believe he has a choice."

I nodded slowly, understanding now. This wasn't just about diplomacy. It was about control.

As we flew deeper into the night, I glanced at the window, watching the lights of Nigeria disappear beneath us. The country was burning, but Chris was already onto the next battle.

Moscow awaited.
