Chapter 287: A Call from the King

(Cole's POV – The Summons)

Cole's phone vibrated in his pocket.

He already knew who it was before he pulled it out. Only one person had the power to summon him without warning.

Chris Blackwood.

He glanced around the dimly lit lounge, where half the men in the room were drinking away their nerves. The other half? They were watching the news—footage of explosions, masked figures, whispers of rebellion.

Cole didn't drink, didn't waste time on distractions. He just exhaled, got up, and answered the call.

"Sir."

Chris's voice was calm, but there was an edge to it. "Where are you?"

"Downtown. Watching the fallout."

A pause. Then— "Come to the White House. Now."

Cole didn't hesitate. "On my way."

Chris hung up without another word.

That was never a good sign.

The Drive to the Throne

Cole moved fast, weaving through the darkened streets in his armored vehicle. The city was alive, but there was something different tonight.

A feeling in the air.

Fear. Tension. The kind that came before a storm.

By the time he reached the White House—no longer a government building, but the beating heart of Chris's empire—he could already tell this meeting wasn't just about the rebellion.

It was about something bigger.

Something personal.

The King's Orders

Cole entered the grand office without knocking.

Chris stood by the fireplace, a glass of whiskey in hand, the flames casting sharp shadows across his face. Skylar was nowhere in sight.

Good. That meant this conversation wasn't for her ears.

Cole stopped a few feet away. "You called."

Chris took a sip of his drink before setting it down. When he finally turned to face Cole, his expression was unreadable.

"Tell me about Ethan."

Cole's brows furrowed slightly. "What about him?"

Chris studied him for a moment, then spoke, each word deliberate. "Is he still mine?"

Cole exhaled through his nose, crossing his arms. There it was. The suspicion, the doubt.

"Ethan's loyal," Cole said carefully.

Chris tilted his head slightly. "Is he?"

Silence.

Cole knew better than to lie to Chris Blackwood. He also knew better than to answer too quickly.

"Something changed," Chris continued, voice quiet but sharp. "In the meeting. I saw it. You did too."

Cole's jaw tightened. "He's questioning things. That doesn't mean he's a traitor."

Chris hummed, running a thumb along the rim of his glass. "Maybe. Or maybe he's just waiting for the right moment."

Cole held his ground. "You want me to handle him?"

Chris didn't answer immediately. He turned back to the fire, watching the flames dance.

"Not yet."

Cole raised a brow. "Then what do you want?"

Chris took a slow breath before speaking.

"I want to know what he does when he thinks I'm not watching."

The order was clear. Watch Ethan. Test his loyalty. And if he failed the test?

Cole knew exactly what Chris would do.

And for the first time in years, he wondered—how much of the old Ethan was still left?
