Chapter 399: A Summon from the King

Christiana Blackwood

The moment I stepped into my father's office, I knew this wasn't just another discussion.

Chris Blackwood never summoned someone unless he had something important to say—something that could change the course of everything.

He sat behind his grand desk, his fingers interlocked, his expression unreadable. A single glance at him told me he was already ten steps ahead, playing a game only he fully understood.

"Close the door, Christiana."

I obeyed, my heels clicking against the marble floor as I approached. "You wanted to see me, Father?"

His gaze lifted to meet mine, sharp and calculating. "What do you think of what happened today?"

I let out a small breath. "I think you went too far."

His lips barely twitched. "Too far?"

"Yes," I said without hesitation. "You manipulated your own son, humiliated him in front of the council, and tested his loyalty in the cruelest way possible."

Chris leaned back slightly. "And?"

I narrowed my eyes. "And what?"

"You're not a child, Christiana. You know me well enough to understand that everything I do serves a purpose." He tilted his head slightly. "Classic needed to be tested. He needed to understand the difference between being a man and being a ruler."

I crossed my arms. "And what about Amal? She was a casualty in this."

Chris shook his head. "She was an asset in proving a point. And now Classic knows that emotions can be used as a weapon against him."

I clenched my fists. "And what do you want from me?"

He studied me for a moment before speaking. "I want to know where you stand."

That made me pause.

Chris was many things, but he wasn't one to ask unnecessary questions. He already knew my loyalty belonged to this family. But now?

He was asking for more than loyalty.

He was asking me to choose.

Between him and Classic.

Between control and freedom.

Between the empire he built and the future my brother might one day claim.

I straightened my posture. "I stand with the Blackwoods."

His lips curled into something resembling approval. "Then prove it."

I didn't ask how.

Because I already knew—he had another test in mind.
