Chapter 406: The Queen’s Gambit

Ethan Carter

I hadn't expected Skylar to make a move so soon.

When Chris ordered me to fake his death, I had predicted chaos. Political maneuvering. Power struggles. But I had assumed Classic would be the one standing at the center of it all.

I had been wrong.

Skylar Blackwood had stepped forward and claimed the throne.

The announcement had been swift, catching both the council and the royal family off guard. The Queen had invoked an ancient ruling—one that allowed a reigning monarch's spouse to take control in times of instability.

And now, instead of a young king finding his footing, we had a grieving widow taking charge of an empire.

Chris would be watching.

And he would be furious.

The Council's Reaction

I stood at the edge of the council chamber, arms crossed, as Skylar took her seat at the head of the grand table.

The nobles were whispering among themselves, some visibly unsettled. Others, particularly the older members, looked intrigued.

Classic sat beside his mother, his expression unreadable.

He should have been the one ruling. He was the heir. The rightful king. But now, he was trapped in his mother's shadow.

The Prime Minister finally broke the silence. "Your Majesty, this is… unexpected."

Skylar lifted her chin. "Is it?"

Her voice was composed, steady. She wasn't the heartbroken widow today. She was a ruler.

"The kingdom has lost its king," she continued, her gaze sweeping across the room. "Our enemies will see this as an opportunity. Do you truly believe Classic is ready to face them alone?"

Classic tensed beside her, but he didn't speak.

I narrowed my eyes. Clever. She wasn't taking the throne outright—she was positioning herself as its protector.

Until Classic was "ready."

Classic's Silence

I expected him to argue. To refuse.

But he didn't.

He simply sat there, his hands folded in his lap, his face giving nothing away.

Did he agree with her? Or was he waiting for the right moment to challenge her?

I wasn't sure.

But I knew this—Skylar had just taken control of this empire without a single drop of bloodshed.

And that was more dangerous than any coup.

Chris Will Not Be Pleased

I left the chamber the moment the session ended, retreating to my private quarters.

The moment the door shut behind me, I activated my secure line.

Chris's voice came through almost immediately. "Report."

I exhaled. "Skylar took the throne."

Silence.

Then— "She did what?"

"She claimed temporary rulership. Classic didn't resist."

Another long pause.

Then a slow, dangerous chuckle. "Well, well. My wife surprises me."

I waited, expecting him to give the order to stop her.

But he didn't.

"Let's see how far she's willing to go."

And just like that, the test had shifted.

Skylar wasn't just mourning a king.

She was becoming one.
