I watched him.
Qin Zhe'an threw the bottle of wine to the ground.
He rushed to Gu Nian's side.
She wasn't hurt.
I hadn't pushed her hard.
But she stood there, looking as if she had suffered great injustice.
Qin Zhe'an scanned her from head to toe.
"Does it hurt anywhere? Did you hit anything?"
Gu Nian shook her head.
She turned away from us—
And showed Qin Zhe'an the food she had stuffed in her dress.
"I saved it for you."
"They were eating while you were gone. I kept some for you."
I had never seen Qin Zhe'an that angry before.
He stared at the food for a moment—
Then he flipped the entire table.
The dishes crashed to the floor.
He looked at me.
His eyes were full of disappointment.
He even raised his hand, as if—
As if he was about to hit me.
But in the end, he didn't.
He only grabbed Gu Nian's arm and said, word by word—
"If you're angry, take it out on me. Why did you do this to her?"
"I'm so disappointed in you. I never thought you were this kind of person."
Then he pulled Gu Nian away and left.
I stood in the wreckage.
My heart sank.
Qin Zhe'an and I had been married for forty years.
And in the end—
It meant nothing.
In his eyes—
Gu Nian saving him a few bites of food meant more than me cooking for him for four decades.
Qin Yue sat at the table, soup stains on his shirt.
My daughter-in-law was busy comforting Jingjing.
Qin Yue was busy blaming me.
"Mom, I'm just saying—Aunt Gu is a sick woman. Couldn't you have given in a little?"
My daughter-in-law tugged his sleeve.
"But Aunt Gu was about to push Jingjing! If Mom hadn't stopped her, Jingjing would've fallen!"
Qin Yue didn't care.
"You're overreacting. Aunt Gu wouldn't do that."
I looked at him.
He seemed to be completely unaware of my emotions, or the situation I was in.
He understood his father much more clearly.
"My dad is just being righteous. Mom, you're old enough, and you're still clinging to this ancient bitterness—don't you feel embarrassed?"
"The family used to be fine. It's because of you that things turned out this way. Look at what this family has become!"
I repeated his words.
"Used to be fine?"
"Do you know what 'used to be fine' was built on?"
I thought about those long, exhausting days, remembering the nights I couldn't sleep from fatigue, getting up alone to rub my aching back.
"The peace you wanted was built on your mother's blood and sweat."
My daughter-in-law tugged at my son, but he didn't care. He sneered.
"Mom, stop exaggerating."
"It's just washing some clothes and cooking some food. You're acting like it's all blood and sweat. That's too much."
"I've seen Aunt Gu before. She's just like a child. She's not as troublesome as you say. You just don't like her and want her gone."
I slowly sat down.
It felt like my emotions drained away all at once.
In Qin Yue's shocked gaze, I pointed to the door.
"Get out."
He stood there, his anger flaring, and slammed his hand down.
"If anyone's leaving, it should be you!"
