Amy followed Linda into the manor. They walked down a tree-lined avenue to a white house. Linda found a bathroom for Amy to clean up.
Amy stood under the shower head, feeling the hot water wash over her as Linda's instructions echoed in her ears.
"Starting today, you are Alpha Gavin 's slave."
Alpha Gavin is the mysterious man who bought Amy for a million dollars at a slave auction. His name was already stamped on Amy's mind. Why did he spend so much money on Amy?
"Stinky Pig, are you done with your shower?" Linda said, slapping the bathroom door hard, "Don't procrastinate, you have a lot of work to do!"
Amy immediately dried herself, quickly dressed, and walked out of the bathroom. Standing outside the door, Linda's face was as grim as the clothes she wore.
"Your job today is to clean the attic with Ruby." Linda said, calling for another girl named Ruby. The girl was about Amy's age, and her childish face was covered with tiny freckles.
"You must clean the attic before lunch or I will punish you with the cane! Is that clear?" Linda said.
Amy and Ruby nodded their heads in a huff and waited for Linda to leave. Ruby led Amy through a green lane to a small garret in the middle of nowhere. She got Amy a broom and a rag, and they began to clean the gray garret.
"What's your name?" Ruby asked Amy as she swept.
"My name is Amy."
Amy lifted her long broom and tried to poke at the cobwebs on the ceiling. However, just as Amy's broom is about to touch the cobwebs, Ruby screams in Amy's ear.
"Don't touch it there!"
But it was too late; heavy dust had fallen from the ceiling, and Amy's head and body were covered in it.
"Are you okay?" Ruby asked concerned.
"The dust fell into my eyes." Amy's eyes burned beyond belief.
"I'll go find some water to clean your eyes."
Soon, Ruby returned. She brought a bottle of water and helped Amy carefully clean the dust from her eyes. In a few minutes Amy was able to open her eyes, and the tingling sensation in them was much reduced.
"Thank you!" Amy said.
"I'm guessing you've never done housework before, right?" Ruby surveyed Amy as she asked, "Why did you become a slave?"
"Because my father broke the law, so I went from being the Alpha's daughter to a slave."
Amy's heart ached like a tear whenever the past was mentioned.
"You used to be Alpha's daughter?" Ruby showed a shocked look, "So you used to be a lady. I knew you weren't born an omega wolf."
"We'd better clean up soon or Linda won't leave us alone." Amy did not want to continue the sad subject, so she took the broom and went on cleaning.
"As a friend, I wanted to tell you." Ruby whispered as she worked, "You have to learn to behave here, our masters are very strict, once a slave was executed for making a mistake."
"You mean AlphaGavin ?" Amy asked in a small voice.
"You can't call Alpha by his first name." Ruby put her finger between her lips in a shushing gesture, "He can only be addressed as a Master."
"So what else do I need to be aware of?" Amy's grip on her broom tightened uneasily.
"Don't make the mistake of looking your master in the eye." Ruby looked around warily, "No laughing or deliberately dressing up in front of Luna, Luna doesn't like women in the manor to be more beautiful than her."
"Does Master have a mate?" Amy asked curiously.
"Luna and Alpha are choosing mate, our Alpha married a widow with a son."
"He must love his wife very much then."
Usually Alpha's chose their destined mate to marry, only a few Alpha's without a mate would choose a non-mate female to marry.
Loyalty to a mate was a werewolf tradition.
"I don't think so." Ruby said, "Sometimes other maids will see the Alpha come home in the middle of the night with another woman."
AlphaGavin proved to be a mercurial man.
"Have you ever seen Alpha in person?" Amy asked.
"No." Ruby shook her head, "But everyone says in private that he's a grumpy and ugly man."
Amy had trouble imagining what kind of man AlphaGavin would be.
"How dare you be lazy here." Linda's voice came from behind her, and then she swung the cane in her hand and struck Amy and Ruby hard.
"Get to work!"
The cane struck Amy violently, and Amy bore the pain and hurried on with the cleaning. When Amy and Ruby had managed to finish cleaning the attic, Linda sent them out into the garden to weed again.
Amy and Ruby had to work under a scorching sun without rest or water. Amy almost fainted several times, but Ruby was there to help her.
"Just bear with it, it will be over soon." Ruby comforted Amy.
So Amy forced herself to go on with her work, and it was not until the evening that their work really came to an end. Linda, however, gave them only a slice of bread for supper. In the face of Linda's harshness, Amy and Ruby can only choose to endure.
At night, Linda takes Amy into a utility room and points to a dimly lit room. She said to Amy, "This will be your room from now on."
The utility room was lighted by a single dim bulb, there was no bed, only a thin, tattered blanket on the floor, and moldy garbage was piled in the corner.
When Amy moved the garbage, a swarm of cockroaches immediately ran out of the garbage, almost startling her.
It was late in the evening before Amy had finished clearing away all the rubbish from the utility room, but there was still a musty, damp smell wafting through the room, and when Amy opened the window the cold wind blew in. The temperature difference between day and night was so great that Amy had no choice but to close the window and sleep with a blanket wrapped around her.
In the silence of the middle of the night Amy could not help waking up. She opened her eyes to the dimly lighted room.
Amy remembered all that had happened during the day, and her heart was filled with endless uneasiness and fear. Amy had no idea what fate she was about to experience here.
She had been a free girl, and now she was a helpless slave.
Amy closed her eyes and tried to soothe the anxiety within her, but the apprehension could not be restrained. She wondered if she could live on this estate, if she could escape this endless misery.
Out of sheer physical exhaustion, Amy falls asleep without realizing it. In her dreams, the man who appeared at the auction reappears in Amy's dreams.
That blurred face was always in Amy's mind.
The next day, Amy was awakened by a knock at the door. So Amy rushed to open the door. Linda appeared in the doorway with a stern face. She did not even glance at Amy.
"Come with me!" She said coldly.
Amy dared not ask more questions, but followed Linda. Linda led Amy to the gate. She pointed to a black car and said to Amy, "Get in."
Once Amy was in the back seat, the driver started the car and drove forward. A panicked Amy tapped on the car window and asked, "Where are you taking me?"
Linda, however, made no reply to Amy, but turned and went away.
