Chapter 117: The Mural

Knock knock.

Silas rapped on the rock wall.

The sound that came back confirmed that the area behind it was likely hollow.

Should he have Blaziken forcefully break through it?

Silas hesitated for a moment.

No that wouldn't work. First of all, performing an explosive operation in an underground cavern like this was extremely dangerous. If a collapse happened, he wouldn't even have time to run.

He didn't have any expertise in this kind of thing.

And making too much noise could attract other Pokémon.

No matter how he looked at it, a place like this couldn't be opened with just a simple punch.

Thinking this, he subconsciously threw a light punch at the center of the rock wall.

Crash!

With that motion, suddenly, the ground beneath his feet collapsed, revealing a massive hole.

"What the hell!"

Before Silas could react, he was already falling in.

"Blaziken!"

At his shout, Blaziken's fiery red figure darted along the rocky wall of the cave, leaping swiftly downwards from side to side.

"Catch me!"

Blaziken grabbed Silas in one swift motion, scooping up his entire body and cradling him princess-style in its arms.

Its feet scraped violently against the cave wall as it adjusted its strength, then it leapt upward.

In just a flash, Trainer and Pokémon had returned to the surface.

Silas hooked one arm around Blaziken's neck and gave it a pat, signaling it to put him down.

His heart was still pounding; his legs trembled uncontrollably.

That was way too intense.

At the same time, he cursed himself for being too curious. Why the hell did he have to go and punch the rock wall?

Boom!

A low rumble echoed through the air.

Before him, the gaping hole that had just opened in the ground suddenly sealed shut again.

Silas's expression darkened was it some kind of mechanism?

Judging by how rough it looked, it was probably an ancient contraption left by people from long ago, not a modern creation.

"Blaziken, use your weakest Ember attack on the center of the rock wall."

Silas narrowed his eyes and instructed Blaziken while retreating backward along with Boldore.

Physical strikes seemed to activate the trap. What about energy-based attacks?

Blaziken gave a small nod, and a tiny, glowing ember floated out from its beak, slowly drifting toward the center of the rock wall.

But the expected sound of impact never came. The moment the ember touched the rock wall, it suddenly lit up with a brownish-yellow glow and absorbed the fire-type energy completely.

Silas nearly cursed aloud. This is the Pokémon world what kind of fantasy nonsense is this?

He had read many records about historical ruins and exploration, but had never seen a trap like this one.

He frowned. Physical attacks didn't work, and neither did energy attacks. So how exactly was he supposed to access whatever was behind this wall?

As for giving up what a joke. The existence of this kind of mechanism clearly meant the thing hidden behind it was of great value. If it were something ordinary, it wouldn't be protected by such a bizarre contraption.

"Blaziken, keep using Ember continuously and gradually increase the power."

While thinking aloud, Silas had Blaziken continue attacking the wall, trying to test the limit of its defenses.

"Blaz..!"

Blaziken responded and began launching a series of Ember attacks in rapid succession at the rock wall.

The brownish-yellow glow lit up like fireworks in the dark cave, flashing again and again.

After nearly three minutes of continuous Ember assaults, Blaziken had to stop and rest a bit.

Even with its strength, sustaining that kind of controlled output was exhausting for a Pokémon.

"Hm, it's working. So, what method does the wall use to replenish its defenses?"

Silas narrowed his eyes. He had keenly noticed that after the three-minute barrage, the glow from the rock wall had dimmed slightly.

Just as he suspected, this type of defense was essentially a matter of energy offsetting energy.

And judging by the strength of Blaziken's attacks, it hadn't caused any damage to the structure of the cave itself.

"Boldore, use Rock Slide. Just one rock is enough."

Giving Blaziken a chance to rest, Silas directed Boldore to continue the assault and test out another theory of his.

A rock from Boldore's Rock Slide made contact with the wall. No traps were triggered, and unlike the Ember attacks, the energy wasn't neutralized either. Instead, the rock silently merged with the wall.

Silas nodded slightly. So the wall replenished its defenses using rock- or ground-type energy, huh?

No wonder none of the wild Pokémon in the cave had been able to get through most of them belonged to other types and lived on the surface.

"Well then, Blaziken, I'm afraid I'll have to ask a bit more of you."

Silas patted Blaziken beside him.

Blaziken understood immediately.

"Let's try Flamethrower this time. Keep the power under control, and slowly increase the intensity."

"Blaziken!"

A flame jet much smaller than during battle shot from Blaziken's beak and blasted the rock wall. The brownish-yellow glow didn't fade this time it remained constant.

The attack lasted for over a full minute before Blaziken, panting heavily, finally stopped.

The poor Pokémon looked utterly exhausted and glanced pleadingly at his Trainer Boss, I'm about to get wrung dry. I can't keep this up!

Silas himself was starting to feel suffocated, his body soaked in sweat.

In such a sealed-off space, Fire-type moves really were a death sentence.

He had no choice but to lead Blaziken outside. After resting for over ten minutes, they resumed the attack.

This repeated seven or eight times. Nearly two hours had passed, and Blaziken's feathers drooped in utter fatigue.

"Boldore!"

Boldore's call immediately made Blaziken halt.

Silas asked, "Are you saying you can control the wall to open now?"

Boldore responded with a sound that signified its confidence according to its senses, it should be able to give it a try.

"Go on, then."

Blaziken urged it on quickly If you can open it, then do it! If we keep burning like this, I'm going to faint!

Boldore slowly walked up to the rocky wall and stood motionless.

Its body began vibrating with pulsing earthy-yellow energy.

"Boldore!"

With Boldore's deep cry, the rock wall slowly started to part.

Silas gave Boldore a pat of approval to show it had done a great job.

He then led Blaziken cautiously through the opening in the rock wall.

What came into view was a stone tunnel with clear signs of artificial construction. Scattered along the sides were pieces of luminous stones, providing a dim glow.

He crouched down there were streaks of silver engravings on the ground. He touched them. Silver?

Following the direction in which the silver markings extended, one end led back toward the rock wall where they had entered, and the other led deeper into the cave.

As he walked, Silas kept a keen eye on everything around him.

The tunnel walls were adorned with murals and ancient script.

He couldn't read the script, of course, but the murals were quite vivid. They depicted various Pokémon Aerodactyl, Kabutops, and two very different Charizard.

Are those Mega Evolutions? The X and Y forms? Silas thought.

Although the Pokémon League had not yet publicly disclosed anything about Mega Evolution, he knew quite a bit from his previous life.

In addition to those, there was another Pokémon he didn't recognize it looked similar to a Triceratops from his past life.

The murals showed the five Pokémon all fighting against one bizarre-looking Pokémon.

"Deoxys?"

Silas stared at the mural showing a Pokémon with three distinct forms, falling deep into thought. He seriously considered turning back and running for his life.
