Ji Xiaonuan felt awkward.
Although she knew that He Rou doted on her, why did it sound as if she couldn't get married...
She made a few sounds of acknowledgment, more or less brushing the matter aside.
After eating for a while longer, He Rou's phone rang.
She quickly answered the call, then got up to grab her coat. "You two keep eating. I have an emergency situation and need to go on duty."
"I also have to go out now." Ji Haifeng looked at his phone somewhat helplessly. "There's an emergency patient and I've been called in."
"Dad, Mom, take these with you to eat on the way." Ji Xiaonuan quickly packed the food in lunch boxes and gave one to each of them.
"Our Xiaonuan really knows how to care for others." He Rou gently stroked her head with a look of reluctance and a hint of guilt in her eyes. "My dear daughter, I'm really sorry. I can't even accompany you during the Spring Festival."
"It's okay," Ji Xiaonuan saw them out. "Don't worry and go about your business. I'm old enough now."
After they left, the house instantly became much quieter.
Ji Xiaonuan returned to the dining table and couldn't help but let out a bitter laugh.
Her father was a doctor and her mother was a police officer, both occupations that kept them extremely busy. Although they doted on her immensely, this kind of thing had happened quite often since she was a child, and she was already used to it.
However, in previous years, her brother had been with her, but this year, she was all alone.
Ji Xiaonuan ate for a while and suddenly felt that eating alone seemed to have no taste at all. She put down her chopsticks and frowned in surprise.
Was there something she had forgotten?
Suddenly, Ji Xiaonuan's expression changed, and she quickly picked up her phone.
After getting off the plane, she had forgotten to let Chi Jun'an know that she was safe. Clearly, before she came back, Chi Jun'an had repeatedly reminded her, but in her excitement, she had completely forgotten about it.
Just as she was about to make the call, Chi Jun'an called her first.
Ji Xiaonuan answered the call with a hint of shame.
"Did you get home?" he asked.
"Yeah." Ji Xiaonuan said, feeling a bit embarrassed.
"Is it convenient for you to talk now?" Chi Jun'an asked considerately.
"It is." Ji Xiaonuan looked at the empty house and let out a sad sigh.
"What's wrong?" he asked softly.
She hesitated for a moment, but finally told Chi Jun'an the truth.
"So, you're the only one at home now?" Chi Jun'an raised his eyebrows slightly. "Yes." Ji Xiaonuan said helplessly.
"When will they be back?" Chi Jun'an asked next.
"I don't know. But judging from previous situations, they probably won't be back until midnight." Ji Xiaonuan said dejectedly.
"Okay, I see." Chi Jun'an said softly.
Ji Xiaonuan was taken aback.
Why did Chi Jun'an's words sound so strange? What did he mean by "he saw"? However, she didn't pay too much attention to it.
The two of them chatted casually for a few more words and then hung up the phone.
Soon it was evening, and Ji Xiaonuan received calls from her parents one after another, telling her to just order takeout for dinner.
Ji Xiaonuan didn't know whether to laugh or cry. She could be said to be so doted on by her family that she almost couldn't take care of herself in daily life. Her parents were so busy, yet they still found time to care about her.
Just as she was about to order takeout, Chi Jun'an called again.
"Hello." Ji Xiaonuan answered the phone in surprise.
"What do you want to eat for dinner?" Chi Jun'an asked.
"I don't know. Just order takeout, I guess." Ji Xiaonuan said casually.
"Don't you have anything to eat at home?" he frowned.
"There were some leftovers from lunch." Ji Xiaonuan said. "But I don't really want to heat them up. After all, I don't want to blow up the kitchen just for a meal."
Chi Jun'an chuckled softly. This little girl still had some self-awareness.
"Go and open the refrigerator." he said softly.
"Huh?" Ji Xiaonuan was confused, but she still did as he said.
"What's in there?"
"There's fish, shrimp, and all sorts of things."
"Then what do you want to eat?" he asked.
"What, are you planning to cook for me?" Ji Xiaonuan asked with a smile.
"Yeah." Chi Jun'an said softly.
Ji Xiaonuan was instantly stunned. "What do you mean by 'yeah'?"
"I mean I'll cook for you." Chi Jun'an said calmly. "Open the door."
Ji Xiaonuan's hand shook, and she almost dropped her phone.
Surely she hadn't been hearing things?
Not only did Chi Jun'an say he would cook for her, but he was actually asking her to open the door?
Could it be?
He should be in the capital city. Could he really be standing outside her door already? Chi Jun'an wouldn't really give her such a big surprise, would he?
There was a knock on the door. She quickly ran to the door and peeked through the peephole. To her surprise, she really saw Chi Jun'an standing outside. Ji Xiaonuan felt as if she had been severely shocked, and she suddenly didn't know whether she should open the door or not.
"Ji Xiaonuan," Chi Jun'an said calmly. "If you don't open the door soon, your neighbor might notice me."
She came to her senses and quickly opened the door.
Chi Jun'an walked in, and Ji Xiaonuan quickly closed the door. She asked in a bit of a frenzy, "Why are you here?"
"I told you, we'd meet again soon." Chi Jun'an smiled faintly.
Ji Xiaonuan felt like crying but had no tears. How could she have known that "soon" would be this soon!
"Do I need to change my shoes?" Chi Jun'an asked.
Ji Xiaonuan helplessly took out a pair of her brother's slippers from the shoe cabinet and handed them to him.
Chi Jun'an changed his shoes and followed her into the living room.
"My house is quite small," Ji Xiaonuan quickly put away all the snack bags on the coffee table in the living room. She said awkwardly, "You, you can sit down first. I'll pour you a cup of tea."
"Don't bother." Chi Jun'an turned and walked towards the kitchen. "What do you want to eat?"
"Are you really going to cook for me?" Ji Xiaonuan was taken aback.
"Otherwise, what did you think I came here for?" Chi Jun'an calmly opened the refrigerator.
"Can you even cook?" Ji Xiaonuan looked at him curiously.
He was Chi Jun'an. Usually, there were people taking care of his daily life. He didn't need to do this kind of thing himself, and he wouldn't learn cooking to please anyone. But could he really cook?
Chi Jun'an calmly took out the ingredients from the refrigerator and said lightly, "Yes."
Ji Xiaonuan was convinced. She couldn't help but ask in confusion, "Chi Jun'an, is there anything you can't do? Is there something you don't know how to do?"
"Yes." He thought for a moment and said calmly.
"What?" Ji Xiaonuan asked curiously.
"I don't know how not to love you." He looked at her with deep eyes, and in his profound gaze, there was an unyielding tenderness.
Ji Xiaonuan's heart started beating faster. This sudden love confession was a bit too much for her to handle.
"What are you talking about!" Ji Xiaonuan said in a flurry, holding some vegetables and trying to help with washing them.
But Chi Jun'an suddenly grabbed her wrist.
"What are you doing?" she asked shyly.
"That's what I want to ask you. What are you doing?" Chi Jun'an looked at her palm.
"I'm helping you wash the vegetables. Although I can't cook, I can wash the vegetables and such..." Ji Xiaonuan followed his gaze and looked at what was in her hand. Her voice immediately trailed off. She was holding two eggs! "Do you wash the eggs before eating them in your family?" Chi Jun'an asked with a mischievous smile.
