"Are you afraid of me?"
Elena gave a tight smile. "Not at all. I just, um… wanted to thank you for your help earlier."
Damian didn't reply.
Instead, he reached out and pulled her toward him.
Elena's breath caught as she landed against his chest.
"Then show me some sincerity," he murmured.
"What?" Elena's mind went blank.
"I, Damian Blackwell, have had three wives. You are the first to escape marriage. How do you think I should deal with that?"
So he was here to settle the score after all.
Elena steadied herself. "Mr. Blackwell, that was a misunderstanding!"
"Oh? So you do want to marry me?"
"Mr. Blackwell, this is the first time I've even met you! Marriage should be based on mutual feelings, and I…"
"Feelings can grow over time."
Elena was speechless.
Even if she believed in the goodness of people, she couldn't force herself to have feelings for someone just like that.
