Chapter 23: Beyond Human Limits
The air inside the ruined training hall was thick with tension. Pieces of shattered metal and cracked concrete littered the ground, remnants of Dante's last attack. He could still feel the raw energy pulsing beneath his skin, waiting, wanting to be unleashed again.
Lyra checked her tablet, her expression calculating. "That last strike… It wasn't just strength or speed. You channeled energy into it."
Cain leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "Yeah, Goldie here just blasted a hole through reinforced steel. I'd say that's more than just a lucky punch."
Dante flexed his fingers, golden veins still glowing faintly beneath his skin. "I didn't just hit it. I felt it. The energy wasn't wild this time. It was…" He hesitated, searching for the right word. "Controlled."
Lyra nodded. "Good. Then we push further."
She walked to a panel on the far wall and pressed a few buttons. The ground rumbled as thick steel barriers rose from the floor, forming a circular arena around them. At the same time, mechanical drones descended from the ceiling—sleek, black machines armed with pulse cannons.
Dante's eyes narrowed. "What's this?"
"A combat test," Lyra said. "You need to learn how to fight while controlling your energy, not just in bursts, but consistently."
Cain grinned. "Oh, this is gonna be fun."
Lyra tapped on her tablet, and the drones activated. Their targeting systems locked onto Dante, their pulse cannons charging with a low hum.
Then—they attacked.
Dante moved.
His body reacted instinctively, dodging the first energy blast with inhuman speed. Another drone fired—he ducked, then lunged forward, his fist smashing through the drone's metallic frame like paper. Sparks and metal shards rained down, but there was no time to stop.
Two more drones swooped in, firing in rapid succession.
Dante twisted his body, weaving between the shots before leaping toward the second drone. This time, he focused—not just on his strength, but on the energy flowing through him.
He struck.
A golden shockwave erupted from his fist, tearing through both drones at once. The energy rippled outward, distorting the air before fading into silence.
Lyra watched carefully, noting every movement. "You're adapting fast."
Dante exhaled, his heartbeat steady. "Not fast enough."
Cain smirked. "Then let's crank it up."
He stepped forward, cracking his knuckles. "Forget the drones. You want real training?" His crimson eyes gleamed. "Then fight me."
Dante met his gaze. A challenge. A real fight.
He smirked. "Bring it."
Cain didn't hesitate.
He moved like a blur, closing the distance in an instant. His fist shot forward, aiming straight for Dante's ribs—
Dante caught it.
For a split second, Cain's eyes widened in surprise.
Then, Dante countered.
He twisted, using Cain's own momentum against him. A sharp impact, then Cain was airborne, flipping mid-air before landing smoothly on his feet.
Cain grinned. "Now that's more like it."
The fight had begun.
