Chapter 31: The Weight of Power
Dante sat on the cold ground, his breath steady but his body screaming in protest. Every muscle burned, every nerve felt raw. Sweat dripped down his brow, mixing with the dirt beneath him.
Across from him, Cain leaned against a broken pillar, watching with a smirk. "You're getting faster," he said, tossing a knife in the air. "But you still hesitate."
Dante's fingers twitched. He knew Cain was right. There was something inside him—something powerful—but every time he tried to tap into it, it felt like holding back a storm. One wrong step, and he could lose control.
Lyra crossed her arms. "Again."
Dante groaned but pushed himself up. His golden eyes flickered as he focused. The training field—a ruined courtyard deep underground—was littered with marks from his last failures. Scorch marks, cracked stone, and deep claw-like gashes he didn't remember making.
Cain flipped his knife lazily. "This time, don't think. Just act."
The moment the words left his mouth, he moved.
Fast.
Dante barely had time to react before Cain was on him, blade flashing toward his throat. Instinct kicked in. His body shifted, dodging at an inhuman speed. He twisted, launching a counterstrike—
But Cain was gone.
Dante's foot hit empty air, his balance thrown off. Before he could correct himself, a sharp force slammed into his back. He hit the ground hard, coughing.
Cain crouched beside him. "Hesitated again."
Dante clenched his teeth. It wasn't hesitation. It was fear.
Fear of what he might become if he truly let go.

The Voice in the Dark
That night, as Dante sat by the dim fire, exhaustion weighing him down, he heard it again.
The voice.
Soft, echoing from the back of his mind.
Why do you hold back?
Dante stiffened. He glanced at Lyra and Cain, but they were already asleep. The voice wasn't real. It was coming from within.
You weren't made to be afraid.
His hands trembled. He shut his eyes, trying to drown it out, but the golden pulse in his veins flared—hungry, demanding.
He had spent so long trying to control it. But what if control wasn't the answer?
What if he had to surrender?
