The group stumbled through the dense underbrush, their bodies weighed down by exhaustion and the recent battle. Jin could feel his muscles ache, his breath shallow from the effort of fighting the Feral Knight. He had saved them, but the cost was still fresh on his mind.
The forest seemed to close in around them, its oppressive darkness hanging just behind their steps. Jin had hoped to avoid the shadows, but they were never far behind. The quiet hum of the trees, the whispers of ancient powers, all felt like they were closing in on them.
Aelius limped slightly, his hand gripping a gash on his side as he moved forward. "We need to get out of here," he muttered, his voice rough from the fight. "This forest isn't like anything I've ever seen. There's no way it's safe."
Aria, walking ahead of the group, nodded in agreement. She was scanning their surroundings constantly, her bow ready in case something else emerged from the depths. "We need to find a way out," she said quietly, though her voice lacked its usual confidence. The battle had shaken her more than she let on. "But we have no idea where the exit is. The paths keep changing."
Caris, his face pale and drawn, kept his head low, his eyes darting nervously between the trees. "I don't care how we get out… I just want to leave. I've had enough of this forest."
Jin didn't reply immediately. His mind was far away, still processing the fight, the way he had barely scraped by against the beast. Part of him wanted to stay in the shadows, hidden away from the world, but another part of him felt an unfamiliar pull. They couldn't stay here, not with the way the forest was pressing in on them. He had already seen what this place could do to people.
"I know a way," Jin said suddenly, his voice surprising even himself. It was the first time he had spoken with such certainty in days. "There's a way out. I can take you to it."
Aria looked at him, her brow furrowed in skepticism. "You've been here alone for so long, Jin. How do you know there's a way out? And even if there is, will the forest let us leave?"
Jin's gaze shifted to the trees, his expression unreadable. He could feel the pulse of the forest, the strange pull that kept him rooted to this place. But there was something else too—something older. He could almost hear the whisper of forgotten paths, the way the forest shifted to guide him toward a path he hadn't seen in years.
"I know where it is," he said again, more firmly this time. "I've been through it before. Trust me."
Aelius exchanged a glance with Aria before giving a slow nod. He wasn't sure he fully trusted Jin yet, but they had no other choice. "Alright. Lead the way."
And so, they began their journey once again, though this time with a clear purpose: escape. Jin led them through the forest, taking sharp turns and weaving between trees. The group followed closely behind, their steps lighter with the hope of leaving the oppressive darkness behind.
But the forest wasn't going to let them go that easily.
As they moved deeper into the heart of the Dark Forest, Jin couldn't help but feel the growing tension in the air. He didn't have the ability to explain it, but he knew the forest wasn't going to just let them walk out. It had a life of its own, and it was watching them.
The others didn't understand yet. They couldn't know what Jin knew. The forest was alive in ways they couldn't even begin to comprehend.
A sudden gust of wind swept through the trees, and Jin stopped dead in his tracks. The others followed suit, confusion written on their faces. Jin's senses were on edge, the hair on the back of his neck standing up.
Something was wrong.
The forest had shifted.
"I think we're being watched," Jin said softly, his voice barely above a whisper. He didn't want to alarm them, but the pressure in the air was thick. Every instinct screamed at him to move faster, to get out before whatever was coming found them.
Aria's hand instinctively went to her bow, her eyes narrowing as she scanned their surroundings. "What do you mean? What's out there?"
Jin hesitated, his mind racing. The forest was full of danger—more than they had encountered so far. And the creatures within it were far from predictable.
"I'm not sure," Jin said, his voice tense. "But something is coming."
The group stiffened, a sense of foreboding sweeping over them. They had no choice now but to push forward. Jin had to keep moving, to get them to safety before whatever was lurking in the shadows found them.
But the forest had other plans.
