The next morning was gray, droplets of rain falling in a soft, quiet shower.
Rexan walked under her umbrella, grateful she made it to the bus quickly.
She stepped off and navigated the school parking lot, trying to avoid a puddle of water, only to collide with someone.
Her umbrella slipped from her hand.
"Oh, sorry," she said, bending to retrieve it.
Her heart seemed to skip and beat in reverse at the sight of the guy in front of her. Bryan's brother?
She blinked, but before she could confirm, he was gone, vanishing so quickly it felt like a figment of her imagination.
She walked into class just as the bell for first period rang.
As if the weather had a sense of humor, the gray skies suddenly cleared, turning sunny and bright blue.
If looks could kill, the glare she sent the sun would have made it shrink back into the clouds.
Mr. Pattinson strolled in, ready for another mundane day of math.
Rexan groaned, taking out her zombie-themed stationery from her bag, merchandise from the hit zombie movie of 2004.
She was deep into her studies when a voice cut through her focus, smooth and commanding.
"Hello, everyone. I'm Reg."
Her head lifted slowly, her gaze sneaking up beneath her lashes.
He stood at the front of the class, and he was staring right at her.
She squirmed in her seat, wishing a wormhole would swallow her up right then and there.
Mr. Pattinson spoke again, drawing her attention. "Reg is our new transfer student. It's rare for students to transfer in the third year of high school, but please be nice and get along with him."
From the back of the room, Riley's voice rang out, laced with mischief. "Oh, we'll gladly help Reg." She winked dramatically.
The class burst into laughter as Reg moved to take his seat.

Benny caught up with Rexan during recess, jogging alongside her around the basketball court.
"So, you gonna tell me what the hell happened last night before last night?" he pressed, his tone concerned.
She swallowed hard. "Nothing. Bryan tried to hit on me, that's all." It was an easy excuse to use.
"That son of a bitch! I knew he was a total ass!" Benny spat. "Want me to beat him up? Would that cheer you up?"
For the first time in what felt like forever, Rexan smiled. She cupped Benny's face between her palms. "That's sweet and all, Benny, but I don't want you ending up in the hospital."
Benny fanned himself with mock drama. "Good Lord, thank you, because I was scared as hell. Have you seen his damn muscles? He'd end me in minutes... unless we sue him, of course."
Rexan laughed softly. "No, Benny. I'm fine. Nothing really happened."
But her attention shifted, her instincts on edge. Someone was watching her. She glanced over Benny's shoulder and spotted Reg. He stood on the football field in his gear, observing.
She wasn't sure if his focus was on her or the ball in his hand.
"I know he's hot as hell," Benny whispered in her ear, making her jump.
Her face flushed crimson. "I never said that!"
"You thought it," Benny teased. "You're practically drooling, along with half the cheerleaders. And I'm a guy, but even I'm feeling Bi just looking at him. That's how hot he is."
Rexan scrambled for composure, stretching as if that had been her plan all along.
Benny leaned closer, his voice dropping. "You're a good girl, Rexan. You should stay away from him... because he's a very bad guy."
Then he laughed, pulling her into a sprint.
